A vulnerability in the Local Packet Transport Services (LPTS) feature set of Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected device. The vulnerability is due to a lack of input and validation checking on certain Precision Time Protocol (PTP) ingress traffic to an affected device. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by injecting malformed traffic into an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause services on the device to become unresponsive, resulting in a DoS condition. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvj22858.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2018-0418 is a remote denial-of-service issue in Cisco ASR 9000 router software. Malformed Precision Time Protocol traffic can make services on an affected device unresponsive. The business risk is network availability, especially where ASR 9000 routers support critical aggregation or carrier services. Exposure is most likely where Cisco ASR 9000 routers run affected software and can receive PTP traffic from untrusted or poorly controlled networks. The source bundle does not list specific affected versions. Treat this as a network availability risk. Remediation should be prioritized for production ASR 9000 routers supporting critical customer, backbone, or aggregation services, especially if PTP ingress is exposed beyond trusted sources. Mitigation focus: Review Cisco advisory cisco-sa-20180815-asr-ptp-dos for affected and fixed software guidance.; Prioritize upgrades or vendor-recommended remediation for internet- or partner-reachable ASR 9000 routers.; Restrict PTP ingress to trusted timing sources where supported and operationally safe..
