CVE-2026-53670: PREVAIL: Non-singleton typeset in add() skips offset update, allowing OOB access to pass eBPF verification
PREVAIL is a Polynomial-Runtime EBPF Verifier using an Abstract Interpretation Layer. Prior to version 0.2.4, in the Prevail eBPF verifier, EbpfTransformer::add() silently skips offset-variable updates when the destination register carries a non-singleton typeset (two or more simultaneously possible pointer types). Subsequent bounds checks use the stale offset and accept out-of-bounds memory accesses, so a crafted BPF program passes verification even though it would corrupt memory at runtime. This issue has been patched in version 0.2.4.
Security readout for executives and security teams
Plain-English summary
PREVAIL may incorrectly approve a malicious eBPF program that later accesses memory outside permitted bounds. In deployments that rely on the verifier as a security boundary, this could cause memory corruption and compromise confidentiality, integrity, or availability. The flaw affects versions before 0.2.4.
Executive priority
Treat affected environments as an urgent remediation priority when PREVAIL verifies attacker-controlled eBPF programs. Upgrade promptly and restrict program submission during remediation. Systems that do not use PREVAIL, or cannot execute untrusted verified programs, are not shown by the supplied evidence to be exposed.
Technical view
EbpfTransformer::add() fails to update the offset variable when a destination register represents multiple possible pointer types. Later bounds checks evaluate a stale offset, allowing an out-of-bounds access to pass abstract-interpretation verification. The unsafe program may then corrupt memory at runtime. Version 0.2.4 contains the patch.
Likely exposure
Exposure is limited to systems using vbpf PREVAIL earlier than 0.2.4, particularly where untrusted or attacker-influenced eBPF programs can reach verification and execution. The supplied sources do not identify downstream products, default configurations, or confirmed internet-facing deployments.
Exploitation context
The published CVSS 4.0 score is 9.3 and describes remote, low-complexity, unauthenticated exploitation without user interaction. However, PREVAIL is not listed as exploited in the supplied KEV signal, and the sources provide no evidence of active exploitation or a public weaponized exploit.
Researcher notes
This is a verifier soundness failure categorized as CWE-682. The vulnerable transfer function loses precision incorrectly: it retains a stale offset for a non-singleton pointer typeset, making subsequent bounds conclusions unsound. Assess exploitability within each host runtime; the supplied sources do not establish the exact corruption primitive, sandbox boundary, or downstream integrations.
Mitigation direction
Upgrade PREVAIL to version 0.2.4 or later.
Identify applications and services embedding vulnerable PREVAIL versions.
Restrict untrusted eBPF program submission until upgrades are complete.
Review the vendor advisory and release notes for deployment-specific guidance.
Validation and detection
Confirm deployed and embedded PREVAIL versions are 0.2.4 or later.
Inventory dependency manifests, lockfiles, containers, and compiled artifacts for older PREVAIL versions.
Test that previously accepted out-of-bounds programs are rejected after upgrading.
Monitor verifier and runtime logs for abnormal eBPF rejection, crashes, or memory faults.
