CVE-2026-46231: batman-adv: bla: put backbone reference on failed claim hash insert

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: batman-adv: bla: put backbone reference on failed claim hash insert When batadv_bla_add_claim() fails to insert a new claim into the hash, it leaked a reference to the backbone_gw for which the claim was intended. Call batadv_backbone_gw_put() on the error path to release the reference and avoid leaking the backbone_gw object.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2026-46231 is a Linux kernel bug in the batman-adv mesh networking component. A failed internal claim insertion can leak a reference to a backbone gateway object. The source does not provide CVSS, impact rating, or evidence of exploitation, so urgency depends on whether affected systems use batman-adv.

Executive priority

Track this as a kernel maintenance item, not an emergency based on current evidence. Prioritize mesh-networking, appliance, and embedded Linux environments first. Escalate if vendor advisories assign higher severity or exploitation evidence appears.

Technical view

The fixed issue is in batadv_bla_add_claim(). When inserting a new BLA claim into the hash fails, the code retained a backbone_gw reference. The resolution adds batadv_backbone_gw_put() on the error path to avoid leaking the backbone_gw object.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely on Linux systems running affected kernel versions with batman-adv available and used for mesh networking or bridge loop avoidance. General servers without this component enabled are less likely to be practically exposed, but the provided source does not define runtime prerequisites beyond the affected kernel component.

Exploitation context

The CVE source marks KEV as false and provides no public exploitation evidence. The available description indicates a reference leak on an error path, not a demonstrated remote compromise path. Treat exploitation status as unconfirmed unless vendor advisories or later KEV data state otherwise.

Researcher notes

The record describes a lifetime-management bug: a missing put on the failed hash-insert path in batman-adv BLA claim handling. The bundle does not include CVSS, CWE, proof-of-concept details, or explicit attacker prerequisites, limiting confidence in exploitability assessment.

Mitigation direction

  • Update to a vendor kernel containing the referenced stable fixes.
  • Prioritize systems where batman-adv is enabled or required.
  • Check Linux distribution advisories for supported patched package versions.
  • Plan reboot or live-patching according to normal kernel update procedures.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory kernel versions against affected and fixed vendor releases.
  • Check whether batman-adv is loaded, built in, or operationally required.
  • Review kernel package changelogs for the CVE or fix title.
  • Run vulnerability scanning again after the kernel update.
