CVE-2026-4278: Simple Download Counter <= 2.3 - Authenticated (Contributor+) Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'text' Shortcode Attribute

The Simple Download Counter plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'sdc_menu' shortcode in all versions up to, and including, 2.3. This is due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied shortcode attributes, specifically the 'text' and 'cat' attributes. The 'text' attribute is output directly into HTML content on line 159 without any escaping (e.g., esc_html()). The 'cat' attribute is used unescaped in HTML class attributes on lines 135 and 157 without esc_attr(). This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2026-4278 affects the Simple Download Counter WordPress plugin up to version 2.3. A logged-in user with Contributor-level access or higher could save malicious script through a shortcode attribute. That script could run when others view the affected page, risking session theft, content tampering, or misleading site visitors.

Executive priority

Treat as a normal-priority web application remediation unless the site allows many contributors or handles sensitive user sessions. The business risk is reputational and account-impacting rather than infrastructure-wide. Prioritize public-facing WordPress sites and sites where non-admin users can submit content.

Technical view

The issue is stored cross-site scripting in the sdc_menu shortcode. The CVE description cites insufficient sanitization and escaping of user-controlled shortcode attributes, specifically text and cat. The text value is output into HTML content, while cat is used in class attributes without proper escaping. CVSS 3.1 is 6.4, requiring low privileges.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to WordPress sites using Simple Download Counter versions up to and including 2.3, where untrusted or semi-trusted users can create or edit content with shortcodes. Sites with only trusted administrators and no Contributor-level accounts have lower practical risk, but should still verify plugin status.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. Exploitation requires an authenticated account with Contributor privileges or higher, but does not require user interaction beyond a victim viewing the injected page. Stored XSS can affect administrators if they view compromised content.

Researcher notes

Source evidence identifies CWE-79 stored XSS in shortcode attribute handling and references affected code lines plus a WordPress Trac changeset. The bundle does not clearly state a fixed version. Avoid assuming remediation beyond checking vendor guidance and reviewing the referenced changeset.

Mitigation direction

  • Check whether Simple Download Counter is installed and its version.
  • Review vendor or WordPress plugin guidance for an updated fixed release.
  • Restrict Contributor-level access to trusted users until remediated.
  • Audit existing posts and pages using the sdc_menu shortcode.
  • Apply least privilege and remove unused WordPress accounts.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory WordPress sites for the Simple Download Counter plugin.
  • Confirm whether installed versions are 2.3 or earlier.
  • Review pages and posts containing sdc_menu shortcodes.
  • Check for unexpected script-like content in shortcode attributes.
  • Monitor Wordfence and WordPress plugin records for fix details.
