CVE-2026-4248: Ultimate Member <= 2.11.2 - Authenticated (Contributor+) Sensitive Information Exposure to Account Takeover via Shortcode Template Tag

The Ultimate Member plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Sensitive Information Exposure in all versions up to, and including, 2.11.2. This is due to the '{usermeta:password_reset_link}' template tag being processed within post content via the '[um_loggedin]' shortcode, which generates a valid password reset token for the currently logged-in user viewing the page. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to craft a malicious pending post that, when previewed by an Administrator, generates a password reset token for the Administrator and exfiltrates it to an attacker-controlled server, leading to full account takeover.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2026-4248 is a high-risk vulnerability in the Ultimate Member WordPress plugin affecting versions up to and including 2.11.2. An authenticated user with Contributor-level access or higher could create content that, when previewed by an administrator, exposes a valid password reset link for that administrator, potentially leading to account takeover.

Executive priority

Treat as urgent for any WordPress site with Ultimate Member and multiple content authors. The vulnerability can lead to administrator account takeover, but it requires authenticated author access and administrator preview interaction, so prioritize externally exposed sites with contributor workflows first.

Technical view

The issue is a sensitive information exposure flaw involving processing of the {usermeta:password_reset_link} template tag inside post content through the [um_loggedin] shortcode. When an administrator previews malicious pending content, the plugin can generate a password reset token for the administrator viewing the page. The provided CVSS v3.1 score is 8.0 with vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. The bundle cites CWE-285.

Likely exposure

Public WordPress sites running Ultimate Member versions up to and including 2.11.2 are most exposed when they allow untrusted or semi-trusted users to hold Contributor or higher roles and when administrators preview pending posts or submitted content from those users.

Exploitation context

Exploitation requires an authenticated attacker with Contributor-level access or higher and administrator interaction through content preview. The bundle does not support a claim of active exploitation: KEV is false and no source in the provided bundle states active exploitation in the wild.

Researcher notes

The source bundle contains enough detail to assess impact, affected versions through 2.11.2, prerequisites, and likely account-takeover outcome. Patch-related references are present, including a GitHub pull request and WordPress plugin changeset, but the bundle does not explicitly name a fixed release version. No active exploitation claim should be made from this bundle.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify all WordPress sites using the Ultimate Member plugin and confirm whether the installed version is 2.11.2 or earlier.
  • Update Ultimate Member according to vendor guidance. The bundle includes patch-related references, but it does not explicitly state a fixed release version, so do not assume the target version without checking vendor release guidance.
  • Until patched, restrict Contributor or higher access to trusted users only, especially on sites where administrators preview pending content.
  • Review workflows where administrators preview user-authored posts, pages, or submissions that may process Ultimate Member shortcodes.
  • Consider temporarily disabling the plugin or affected shortcode/template-tag behavior if the site cannot be updated promptly and untrusted authors have access.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm the installed Ultimate Member version on each WordPress site and flag any version up to and including 2.11.2.
  • Verify that untrusted accounts do not have Contributor, Author, Editor, or Administrator roles unless required.
  • Review pending or recently submitted content for suspicious use of Ultimate Member shortcodes or password-reset-related template tags.
  • Check administrative account security, including recent password reset events and unexpected account changes.
  • After applying vendor guidance, retest that previewing user-authored content no longer generates or exposes administrator password reset links through the vulnerable shortcode/template-tag path.
