CVE-2026-4075: BWL Advanced FAQ Manager Lite <= 1.1.1 - Authenticated (Contributor+) Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'sbox_id' Shortcode Attribute

The BWL Advanced FAQ Manager Lite plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'baf_sbox' shortcode in all versions up to and including 1.1.1. This is due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied shortcode attributes such as 'sbox_id', 'sbox_class', 'placeholder', 'highlight_color', 'highlight_bg', and 'cont_ext_class'. These attributes are directly interpolated into HTML element attributes without any esc_attr() escaping in the baf_sbox() function. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2026-4075 affects the WordPress plugin BWL Advanced FAQ Manager Lite up to version 1.1.1. A logged-in user with Contributor-level access or higher can store malicious script content through FAQ shortcode attributes. The script may run when others view the affected page, creating risk to site users and administrators.

Executive priority

Treat as a moderate-priority WordPress content integrity issue. Prioritize sites with many content contributors, public registration workflows, or administrators likely to view contributor-created FAQ pages. No active exploitation is cited in the provided sources.

Technical view

The issue is stored cross-site scripting in the plugin’s baf_sbox shortcode. Multiple shortcode attributes, including sbox_id, sbox_class, placeholder, highlight_color, highlight_bg, and cont_ext_class, are insufficiently sanitized and escaped before insertion into HTML attributes in baf_sbox(). CVSS is 6.4, with low privileges required and scope changed.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to WordPress sites running BWL Advanced FAQ Manager Lite versions up to and including 1.1.1, especially sites allowing Contributor or higher users to create or edit content containing plugin shortcodes.

Exploitation context

Sources describe authenticated stored XSS, not unauthenticated takeover. KEV is false, and the provided sources do not report active exploitation. Impact depends on who views the injected page and the privileges or session context of those viewers.

Researcher notes

The source bundle ties the flaw to missing esc_attr-style escaping in baf_sbox(). WordPress Trac references show relevant shortcode code locations and a changeset, but the provided data does not clearly identify a patched version. Avoid assuming a fix beyond vendor-published guidance.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory WordPress sites for BWL Advanced FAQ Manager Lite version 1.1.1 or earlier.
  • Check vendor, WordPress.org, and Wordfence guidance for a fixed release before upgrading.
  • Restrict Contributor and higher content creation rights where not business-critical.
  • Review and remove suspicious baf_sbox shortcode usage in posts, pages, and FAQs.
  • Apply least privilege and require review before publishing shortcode-capable content.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether the plugin is installed and active on each WordPress site.
  • Record the installed plugin version and compare against versions up to 1.1.1.
  • Search content for baf_sbox shortcodes using the named attributes.
  • Review affected pages for unexpected script behavior in a safe test environment.
  • Verify updated code escapes shortcode attributes before HTML output.
