CVE-2026-28419: Vim has Heap-based Buffer Underflow in Emacs tags parsing

Vim is an open source, command line text editor. Prior to version 9.2.0075, a heap-based buffer underflow exists in Vim's Emacs-style tags file parsing logic. When processing a malformed tags file where a delimiter appears at the start of a line, Vim attempts to read memory immediately preceding the allocated buffer. Version 9.2.0075 fixes the issue.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2026-28419 is a memory-safety flaw in Vim before 9.2.0075. A malformed Emacs-style tags file can cause Vim to read memory just before an allocated buffer. Business urgency is moderate because exploitation requires a user to open or process a malicious tags file locally, but developer workstations commonly use Vim. Exposure is most likely on developer, build, and administrator systems running Vim versions earlier than 9.2.0075, especially where users open third-party source trees or tags files. Server exposure is indirect unless local users or automation invoke Vim on untrusted tags files. Treat as a routine but timely workstation and developer-tooling update. It is not currently supported as actively exploited by the provided sources, but affected Vim versions are widespread and the fix is available upstream. Mitigation focus: Upgrade Vim to version 9.2.0075 or later.; Prioritize developer and administrator endpoints that handle untrusted source archives.; Restrict opening untrusted tags files until upgraded..
