CVE-2026-27973: Audiobookshelf has Stored XSS in ItemSearchCard.vue via Audiobook Metadata (Search Results on Mobile App)

Audiobookshelf is a self-hosted audiobook and podcast server. A stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists in versions prior to 0.12.0-beta of the Audiobookshelf mobile application that allows arbitrary JavaScript execution through malicious library metadata. Attackers with library modification privileges can execute code in victim users' browsers/WebViews, potentially leading to session hijacking, data exfiltration, and unauthorized access to native device APIs. The issue is fixed in audiobookshelf-app version 0.12.0-beta, corresponding to audiobookshelf version 2.12.0.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2026-27973 is a stored cross-site scripting issue in Audiobookshelf’s mobile app search results. A user who can modify library metadata could plant malicious content that runs when another user views affected search results. Business impact is mainly account/session compromise or data exposure for Audiobookshelf users, not full server takeover based on current sources.

Executive priority

Treat as a moderate-priority update. It is not known to be exploited and requires privileged metadata access plus user interaction, but shared-library environments should patch promptly to reduce account and data exposure risk.

Technical view

The issue is CWE-79 stored XSS in ItemSearchCard.vue, triggered through malicious audiobook metadata in mobile app search results. Affected versions are audiobookshelf-app before 0.12.0-beta and Audiobookshelf before 2.12.0. CVSS 3.1 is 4.0: network reachable, high attack complexity, high privileges required, user interaction required, changed scope, low confidentiality and integrity impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to organizations or individuals running Audiobookshelf with vulnerable mobile app/server versions and allowing users to modify library metadata. Risk rises where multiple users share libraries or metadata editing is delegated to semi-trusted users.

Exploitation context

No active exploitation is reported in the provided sources, and the CVE is not marked as KEV. Exploitation requires an attacker with library modification privileges and a victim opening affected search results in the mobile app WebView/browser context.

Researcher notes

Evidence points to stored XSS in mobile search rendering of audiobook metadata, fixed by an audiobookshelf-app commit. Sources do not provide evidence of public exploitation. Avoid assuming broader server-side compromise; assess trust boundaries around metadata editing and mobile WebView/session handling.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade audiobookshelf-app to 0.12.0-beta or later.
  • Upgrade Audiobookshelf to 2.12.0 or later, per the advisory mapping.
  • Review vendor advisory and commit for deployment-specific guidance.
  • Limit library metadata modification rights to trusted users until upgraded.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Audiobookshelf server and mobile app versions.
  • Confirm mobile clients are at least 0.12.0-beta.
  • Confirm server deployment is at least 2.12.0.
  • Review library editors and remove unnecessary metadata modification privileges.
  • Check vendor advisory for any updated fixed versions or caveats.
