CVE-2026-27588: Caddy: MatchHost becomes case-sensitive for large host lists (>100), enabling host-based route/auth bypass

Caddy is an extensible server platform that uses TLS by default. Prior to version 2.11.1, Caddy's HTTP `host` request matcher is documented as case-insensitive, but when configured with a large host list (>100 entries) it becomes case-sensitive due to an optimized matching path. An attacker can bypass host-based routing and any access controls attached to that route by changing the casing of the `Host` header. Version 2.11.1 contains a fix for the issue.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Caddy versions before 2.11.1 can mishandle hostname matching when a site uses more than 100 host entries. Because matching may become case-sensitive, a differently cased Host header could avoid host-based routing or access controls. This matters most where Caddy gates sensitive routes based on hostnames.

Executive priority

Treat as a priority patch for Caddy-powered edge, proxy, or application gateway systems using hostname-based access rules. The business risk is unauthorized access to routes intended to be protected by host matching.

Technical view

The documented case-insensitive HTTP host matcher becomes case-sensitive on an optimized path for large host lists over 100 entries. This is CWE-178, improper handling of case sensitivity. The issue can cause host-based route or authorization bypass. Caddy 2.11.1 fixes the behavior.

Likely exposure

Internet-facing Caddy deployments before 2.11.1 are relevant, especially configurations with large host matcher lists and access controls tied to those routes. Deployments not using host-based controls or not exceeding 100 host entries appear less exposed based on the advisory description.

Exploitation context

The CVE is network-reachable, low-complexity, requires no privileges or user interaction, and has a CVSS 4.0 score of 7.7. The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or confirmed active exploitation.

Researcher notes

Focus review on Caddy configurations with more than 100 host entries and authorization or routing decisions bound to the host matcher. Evidence provided identifies a fixed version but does not include exploit-in-the-wild confirmation.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade Caddy to version 2.11.1 or later.
  • Prioritize systems with over 100 host matcher entries.
  • Review host-based access controls for sensitive routes.
  • Check the Caddy advisory and release notes for deployment-specific guidance.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Caddy versions across production and edge environments.
  • Identify configurations using HTTP host matchers with large host lists.
  • Confirm whether access controls depend on host-based routing.
  • After upgrade, verify expected case-insensitive host matching in a safe test environment.

Improper Handling of Case Sensitivity

Improper Handling of Case Sensitivity represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
