CVE-2026-25954: FreeRDP has heap-use-after-free in xf_rail_server_local_move_size

FreeRDP is a free implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol. Prior to version 3.23.0, `xf_rail_server_local_move_size` dereferences a freed `xfAppWindow` pointer because `xf_rail_get_window` returns an unprotected pointer from the `railWindows` hash table, and the main thread can concurrently delete the window (via a window delete order) while the RAIL channel thread is still using the pointer. Version 3.23.0 fixes the issue.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2026-25954 is a memory-safety bug in FreeRDP before 3.23.0. A timing issue can cause the client to use a window object after it was freed. The published impact is limited availability loss, not data theft or full system compromise. Upgrade planning is warranted where FreeRDP is used operationally.

Executive priority

Schedule remediation in the normal vulnerability patch cycle, with higher priority for FreeRDP clients connecting to less trusted RDP endpoints. Current public evidence supports moderate business urgency, not emergency response.

Technical view

FreeRDP’s X11 RAIL handling can dereference a freed xfAppWindow pointer in xf_rail_server_local_move_size. xf_rail_get_window returns an unprotected pointer from the railWindows hash table while another thread may delete the window through a window delete order. This is CWE-416 heap-use-after-free. Version 3.23.0 fixes it.

Likely exposure

Systems running FreeRDP versions earlier than 3.23.0 are potentially exposed, especially X11 clients using RAIL functionality. Exposure depends on whether vulnerable FreeRDP client code is installed or embedded in downstream packages. The source bundle does not identify specific Linux distribution package status.

Exploitation context

The CVSS vector is network reachable, low complexity, no privileges, and no user interaction, with low availability impact only. The source bundle marks KEV as false and provides no cited evidence of active exploitation. Treat exploitation status as not confirmed.

Researcher notes

The issue is a race between RAIL channel use of a window pointer and main-thread deletion. The fix commit and advisory should be reviewed for locking or lifetime-management changes. No public exploit details or active exploitation evidence are included in the provided sources.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.23.0 or later.
  • Check operating system and appliance vendor advisories for backported FreeRDP fixes.
  • Prioritize updates on systems that frequently connect to untrusted RDP services.
  • If immediate upgrade is impossible, review vendor guidance for temporary risk reduction.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory FreeRDP installations and embedded FreeRDP-based clients.
  • Confirm installed FreeRDP versions are 3.23.0 or later.
  • Check distribution package changelogs for CVE-2026-25954 backports.
  • Identify workflows using X11 FreeRDP RAIL features.
  • Monitor FreeRDP advisory updates for revised impact or guidance.
