CVE-2026-25898: Imagemagick Has Global Buffer Overflow (OOB Read) via Negative Pixel Index in UIL and XPM Writer

ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to versions 7.1.2-15 and 6.9.13-40, the UIL and XPM image encoder do not validate the pixel index value returned by `GetPixelIndex()` before using it as an array subscript. In HDRI builds, `Quantum` is a floating-point type, so pixel index values can be negative. An attacker can craft an image with negative pixel index values to trigger a global buffer overflow read during conversion, leading to information disclosure or a process crash. Versions 7.1.2-15 and 6.9.13-40 contain a patch.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2026-25898 affects ImageMagick image conversion. A specially crafted image can cause ImageMagick to read outside expected memory when writing UIL or XPM output, potentially exposing small amounts of memory or crashing the process. The vendor advisory says patched versions are 7.1.2-15 and 6.9.13-40.

Executive priority

Treat as a medium-priority remediation. It can be triggered remotely in exposed image-processing workflows and may cause data exposure or service crashes, but the sourced impact is limited to low confidentiality and low availability with no confirmed exploitation.

Technical view

Before ImageMagick 7.1.2-15 and 6.9.13-40, UIL and XPM encoders did not validate the pixel index returned by GetPixelIndex() before array use. In HDRI builds, Quantum can be floating point, allowing negative pixel index values. This produces an out-of-bounds read, classified as CWE-125, with CVSS 3.1 score 6.5.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most relevant where ImageMagick processes untrusted or user-supplied images and converts them to UIL or XPM formats. Affected versions include ImageMagick 7.0.0 through before 7.1.2-15, and 6.x before 6.9.13-40.

Exploitation context

The CVE record rates this as network-accessible, low complexity, no privileges, and no user interaction. The provided sources do not state active exploitation, and this CVE is not marked KEV in the supplied bundle.

Researcher notes

Focus validation on version, build configuration, and conversion paths involving UIL or XPM writers. The root issue is missing bounds validation for GetPixelIndex() results in HDRI contexts. Avoid assuming impact beyond out-of-bounds read, information disclosure, or crash based on current sources.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade ImageMagick to 7.1.2-15, 6.9.13-40, or later.
  • Prioritize systems processing untrusted images or automated image uploads.
  • Check vendor guidance if using downstream OS packages or bundled ImageMagick libraries.
  • Restrict untrusted image conversion workflows until patched.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory ImageMagick versions across servers, containers, and application dependencies.
  • Confirm whether HDRI builds are deployed.
  • Identify services converting user-supplied images to UIL or XPM.
  • Verify patched versions are installed after remediation.
