CVE-2026-25154: LocalSend has Stored XSS in Web Share Interface via Filename

LocalSend is a free, open-source app that allows users to share files and messages with nearby devices over their local network without needing an internet connection. In versions up to and including 1.17.0, when a user initiates a "Share via Link" session, the LocalSend application starts a local HTTP server to host the selected files. The client-side logic for this web interface is contained in `app/assets/web/main.js`. Note that at [0], the `handleFilesDisplay` function constructs the HTML for the file list by iterating over the files received from the server. Commit 8f3cec85aa29b2b13fed9b2f8e499e1ac9b0504c contains a patch.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

LocalSend versions up to 1.17.0 can display shared file names unsafely in the “Share via Link” web page. A maliciously named file could run script in another user’s browser when they view the share page. This is a medium-severity issue requiring user interaction and local sharing context.

Executive priority

Treat as a routine but prompt desktop application update. Business risk is moderate because exploitation needs user interaction and a specific sharing workflow, but successful abuse could affect trust in internal file-sharing sessions.

Technical view

CVE-2026-25154 is a stored cross-site scripting issue in LocalSend’s web share interface. The vulnerable client-side file listing logic in app/assets/web/main.js builds HTML from filenames received from the server. CVSS is 6.1: network-reachable, low complexity, no privileges, user interaction required, changed scope, low confidentiality and integrity impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to LocalSend deployments or endpoints running versions <= 1.17.0 and using “Share via Link.” Risk depends on whether users receive or host files with untrusted filenames and whether other users open the generated local web share page.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not report active exploitation, and this CVE is not marked KEV. Exploitation requires a crafted filename and a user viewing the affected share interface. Impact is browser-side script execution in the context of the LocalSend web share page.

Researcher notes

The source bundle identifies CWE-79 and affected versions <= 1.17.0. It names the patched commit but does not provide a fixed version number. Avoid assuming internet-wide exposure because LocalSend is intended for nearby local-network sharing.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify LocalSend installations running version 1.17.0 or earlier.
  • Apply a vendor-supported release that includes commit 8f3cec85aa29b2b13fed9b2f8e499e1ac9b0504c.
  • If no fixed release is available, follow LocalSend advisory guidance.
  • Avoid using “Share via Link” with untrusted filenames until patched.

Validation and detection

  • Check installed LocalSend versions across managed endpoints.
  • Confirm the deployed build includes the referenced patch commit.
  • Review whether users rely on “Share via Link” workflows.
  • Monitor vendor advisory updates for fixed release details.
