CVE-2026-2494: ProfileGrid <= 5.9.8.2 - Cross-Site Request Forgery to Group Membership Request Approval/Denial

The ProfileGrid – User Profiles, Groups and Communities plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Cross-Site Request Forgery in all versions up to, and including, 5.9.8.2. This is due to missing nonce validation on the membership request management page (approve and decline actions). This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to approve or deny group membership requests via a forged request granted they can trick a site administrator into performing an action such as clicking on a link.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2026-2494 affects the ProfileGrid WordPress plugin. A malicious site or link could cause a logged-in administrator to unintentionally approve or deny group membership requests. This is not a full site takeover issue, but it can alter community access decisions and undermine moderation workflows.

Executive priority

Handle during the next normal WordPress maintenance cycle unless ProfileGrid groups protect sensitive access. Prioritize faster if group membership grants private content, customer access, or operational privileges.

Technical view

ProfileGrid up to and including 5.9.8.2 lacks nonce validation on membership request approve and decline actions. The issue is CWE-352 Cross-Site Request Forgery with CVSS 3.1 score 4.3. Attackers need no account, but exploitation requires administrator interaction with a forged request.

Likely exposure

WordPress sites using ProfileGrid versions up to and including 5.9.8.2 are potentially exposed, especially where group membership controls access to private or moderated communities.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show active exploitation, and this CVE is not listed as KEV. Exploitation requires tricking a logged-in site administrator into taking an external action, such as clicking a crafted link.

Researcher notes

The vulnerability is limited to integrity impact on membership request decisions. The key condition is missing nonce validation on approve and decline actions. Sources include Wordfence advisory data and WordPress plugin Trac references, but the bundle does not clearly name a fixed release.

Mitigation direction

  • Check vendor guidance and update ProfileGrid to a version newer than 5.9.8.2 if available.
  • Restrict WordPress administrator access to trusted users only.
  • Warn administrators not to click unsolicited links while authenticated to WordPress.
  • Review group membership approvals and denials for unexpected changes.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory WordPress sites using the ProfileGrid plugin.
  • Confirm installed ProfileGrid version is greater than 5.9.8.2 or vendor-marked fixed.
  • Review plugin code or changelog for nonce validation on membership request actions.
  • Check audit logs for unusual membership approvals or denials.
