CVE-2026-24748: Kargo's `GetConfig()` and `RefreshResource()` API endpoints allow unauthenticated access

Kargo manages and automates the promotion of software artifacts. Prior to versions 1.8.7, 1.7.7, and 1.6.3, a bug was found with authentication checks on the `GetConfig()` API endpoint. This allowed unauthenticated users to access this endpoint by specifying an `Authorization` header with any non-empty `Bearer` token value, regardless of validity. This vulnerability did allow for exfiltration of configuration data such as endpoints for connected Argo CD clusters. This data could allow an attacker to enumerate cluster URLs and namespaces for use in subsequent attacks. Additionally, the same bug affected the `RefreshResource` endpoint. This endpoint does not lead to any information disclosure, but could be used by an unauthenticated attacker to perform a denial-of-service style attack against the Kargo API. `RefreshResource` sets an annotation on specific Kubernetes resources to trigger reconciliations. If run on a constant loop, this could also slow down legitimate requests to the Kubernetes API server. This problem has been patched in Kargo versiosn 1.8.7, 1.7.7, and 1.6.3. There are no workarounds for this issue.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Kargo had an authentication flaw that let unauthenticated users reach two API endpoints by presenting any non-empty Bearer token. One endpoint could expose configuration data, including connected Argo CD cluster endpoints, which may help attackers plan follow-on attacks. Another endpoint could be abused to create denial-of-service style load.

Executive priority

Treat as a prompt patching item, especially for exposed Kargo APIs. The issue does not indicate full system compromise, but it can reveal useful environment details and degrade service availability. Upgrade during the next urgent maintenance window for exposed systems.

Technical view

CVE-2026-24748 is a CWE-863 incorrect authorization issue in Kargo before 1.8.7, 1.7.7, and 1.6.3. GetConfig() accepted invalid non-empty Bearer tokens and could disclose configuration data. RefreshResource() was similarly affected and could trigger repeated Kubernetes resource reconciliation activity, impacting Kargo and Kubernetes API performance.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to organizations running affected Akuity Kargo versions with the Kargo API reachable by untrusted users or networks. Internet-facing or broadly accessible internal deployments have higher concern. The sources do not state that credentials, secrets, or direct code execution are exposed.

Exploitation context

The advisory describes unauthenticated network access requiring only a non-empty Bearer token value, with low attack complexity. There is no CISA KEV listing in the provided data and no cited source indicating active exploitation. Impact is mainly configuration disclosure and availability degradation.

Researcher notes

Evidence comes from the CVE record and Akuity GitHub advisory. The advisory states patched versions and no workarounds. Commit references are available, but the provided bundle does not include detailed exploit telemetry or proof of active exploitation.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade Kargo to 1.8.7, 1.7.7, or 1.6.3 as appropriate.
  • Prioritize deployments where the Kargo API is externally or broadly reachable.
  • Review vendor advisory for branch-specific upgrade guidance.
  • There are no workarounds stated in the provided sources.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Kargo deployments and record running versions.
  • Confirm affected versions are upgraded to fixed releases.
  • Review Kargo API exposure from internet and internal untrusted networks.
  • Check logs for unusual access to GetConfig or RefreshResource endpoints.
  • Assess whether disclosed configuration data would aid cluster enumeration.
