CVE-2026-23886: Swift W3C TraceContext has malformed HTTP header that can cause a crash

Swift W3C TraceContext is a Swift implementation of the W3C Trace Context standard, and Swift OTel is an OpenTelemetry Protocol (OTLP) backend for Swift Log, Swift Metrics, and Swift Distributed Tracing. Prior to Swift W3C TraceContext version 1.0.0-beta.5 and Swift OTel version 1.0.4, a denial-of-service vulnerability due to improper input validation allows a remote attacker to crash the service via a malformed HTTP header. This allows crashing the process with data coming from the network when used with, for example, an HTTP server. Most common way of using Swift W3C Trace Context is through Swift OTel. Version 1.0.0-beta.5 of Swift W3C TraceContext and version 1.0.4 of Swift OTel contain a patch for this issue. As a workaround, disable either Swift OTel or the code that extracts the trace information from an incoming header (such as a `TracingMiddleware`).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2026-23886 can let an unauthenticated remote sender crash a Swift service that parses W3C trace context headers. The issue affects Swift W3C TraceContext before 1.0.0-beta.5 and Swift OTel before 1.0.4. Business impact is service disruption, not data theft or integrity compromise, based on the published CVSS vector.

Executive priority

Treat as a timely availability fix for Swift services, especially public-facing APIs. Prioritize systems where a crash would affect customers or critical operations. This is not presented as a data breach risk in the provided sources, but unauthenticated remote denial of service warrants prompt remediation.

Technical view

The vulnerability is improper input validation in Swift W3C TraceContext header parsing. When used in network-facing services, commonly through Swift OTel and tracing middleware, malformed incoming HTTP trace headers can crash the process. Patched versions are Swift W3C TraceContext 1.0.0-beta.5 and Swift OTel 1.0.4.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in Swift HTTP services using Swift OTel or Swift W3C TraceContext to extract trace information from incoming request headers. Internet-facing APIs and services with tracing middleware are the primary concern. Services not using these packages or not parsing incoming trace headers are less likely exposed.

Exploitation context

The CVSS vector indicates remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity triggering with no user interaction, affecting availability only. The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or other evidence of active exploitation. No public exploit status is established by the provided sources.

Researcher notes

Evidence comes from the CVE record and GitHub advisory. The issue maps to CWE-20 and CVSS 5.3. The provided sources name patched versions and a workaround, but do not provide evidence of active exploitation. Avoid assuming exposure beyond Swift OTel, Swift W3C TraceContext, and services parsing incoming trace headers.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade Swift W3C TraceContext to 1.0.0-beta.5 or later.
  • Upgrade Swift OTel to 1.0.4 or later.
  • If upgrading is delayed, disable Swift OTel where feasible.
  • Alternatively disable incoming trace header extraction, such as TracingMiddleware.
  • Check vendor advisory and release notes for environment-specific guidance.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Swift services using Swift OTel or Swift W3C TraceContext.
  • Check dependency versions for Swift OTel below 1.0.4.
  • Check dependency versions for Swift W3C TraceContext below 1.0.0-beta.5.
  • Identify HTTP servers parsing incoming W3C trace context headers.
  • Confirm tracing middleware is disabled or patched in deployed builds.
