CVE-2026-23743: Discourse allows permalinks to restricted resources to leak resource slugs to unauthorized users

Discourse is an open source discussion platform. In versions prior to 3.5.4, 2025.11.2, 2025.12.1, and 2026.1.0, permalinks pointing to access-restricted resources (private topics, categories, posts, or hidden tags) were redirecting users to URLs containing the resource slug, even when the user didn't have access to view the resource. This leaked potentially sensitive information (e.g., private topic titles) via the redirect Location header and the 404 page's search box. This issue is patched in versions 3.5.4, 2025.11.2, 2025.12.1, and 2026.1.0. No known workarounds are available.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Discourse could reveal the names or slugs of private topics, categories, posts, or hidden tags to users who should not see them. The content itself is not described as exposed, but sensitive titles or identifiers may leak through redirects and a 404 search box. Patched versions are available.

Executive priority

Treat as a moderate-priority confidentiality issue. Patch promptly, especially for communities using private areas for sensitive business, customer, legal, or security discussions. This is not described as full content exposure or active exploitation in the provided sources.

Technical view

CVE-2026-23743 is a CWE-200 information disclosure issue in Discourse. Before 3.5.4, 2025.11.2, 2025.12.1, and 2026.1.0, permalinks to restricted resources redirected unauthorized users to URLs containing restricted resource slugs. The advisory also notes leakage through the 404 page search box. CVSS v4.0 score is 6.9.

Likely exposure

Internet-facing Discourse sites with private topics, restricted categories, private posts, or hidden tags are most relevant. Exposure depends on running an affected version and having permalinks that point to restricted resources.

Exploitation context

The issue is network-accessible, low complexity, requires no privileges, and no user interaction per the CVSS vector. The source bundle does not indicate known active exploitation, and KEV status is false.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE record and GitHub advisory. Affected ranges and fixed versions are clear, but no exploitation-in-the-wild evidence or workaround is provided. The vulnerability impact is limited to slug/title disclosure, not modification or availability impact.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade Discourse to 3.5.4, 2025.11.2, 2025.12.1, 2026.1.0, or later as applicable.
  • Review the GitHub security advisory for release-specific guidance.
  • Do not rely on a workaround; the advisory states no known workarounds are available.
  • Prioritize sites where private discussion titles or category names are sensitive.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory all Discourse instances and record their exact versions.
  • Confirm each instance is at or above the patched version for its release track.
  • Review whether private topics, restricted categories, private posts, or hidden tags are used.
  • In a controlled test, verify unauthorized users cannot see restricted slugs via permalink redirects or 404 behavior.
  • Check access logs for unusual unauthenticated requests to permalink URLs, if logging is available.

Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor

Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
