CVE-2026-2362: WP Accessibility <= 2.3.1 - Authenticated (Contributor+) Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via 'alt' Attribute

The WP Accessibility plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via the 'alt' attribute of images processed by the "Long Description UI" feature in all versions up to, and including, 2.3.1. This is due to the plugin's JavaScript retrieving the alt attribute using getAttribute() and unsafely concatenating it into innerHTML and insertAdjacentHTML calls without proper sanitization or escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires the "Long Description UI" setting to be enabled and set to "Link to description."

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2026-2362 affects the WP Accessibility WordPress plugin through version 2.3.1. A logged-in user with Contributor or higher rights could store script content in an image alt attribute. If a specific Long Description UI setting is enabled, that script may run for visitors viewing the affected page.

Executive priority

Treat as a timely WordPress hygiene issue, not an emergency. Prioritize public-facing sites where many contributors can create content. Reduce exposure by updating when a confirmed fixed release is available and disabling the risky setting where needed.

Technical view

The issue is stored DOM-based XSS in WP Accessibility’s Long Description UI feature. Plugin JavaScript reads image alt text with getAttribute() and inserts it into HTML using innerHTML and insertAdjacentHTML without adequate sanitization or escaping. The CVE lists CWE-79 and CVSS 6.4. Exploitation requires Contributor+ access and the feature set to “Link to description.”

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to WordPress sites running WP Accessibility up to and including 2.3.1, with Long Description UI enabled and set to “Link to description.” Risk increases where untrusted or loosely managed users have Contributor, Author, Editor, or Administrator access.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not indicate active exploitation, and the CVE is not marked KEV. This is not described as unauthenticated remote compromise; the attacker needs a valid account with Contributor-level privileges or higher and content creation capability.

Researcher notes

Evidence comes from the CVE, Wordfence entry, WordPress plugin source references, and a plugin changeset. The bundle identifies affected versions through 2.3.1 and the vulnerable JavaScript sinks. It does not provide evidence of active exploitation or a clearly named patched version.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade WP Accessibility beyond 2.3.1 if vendor guidance confirms a fixed release.
  • If not immediately upgradeable, disable Long Description UI or avoid “Link to description.”
  • Restrict Contributor-level and higher access to trusted users only.
  • Review recently added or edited images and pages by lower-privileged users.
  • Monitor vendor, WordPress plugin, and Wordfence advisories for confirmed remediation details.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory WordPress sites using the WP Accessibility plugin.
  • Confirm installed plugin versions and flag versions up to 2.3.1.
  • Check whether Long Description UI is enabled and set to “Link to description.”
  • Review accounts with Contributor-level access or higher.
  • Inspect relevant content for suspicious image alt text without executing it.
