CVE-2026-2352: Autoptimize <= 3.1.14 - Authenticated (Contributor+) Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'ao_post_preload' Meta Value

The Autoptimize plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'ao_post_preload' meta value in all versions up to, and including, 3.1.14. This is due to insufficient input sanitization in the `ao_metabox_save()` function and missing output escaping when the value is rendered into a `<link>` tag in `autoptimizeImages.php`. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page, granted the "Image optimization" or "Lazy-load images" setting is enabled in the plugin configuration.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Autoptimize for WordPress has a stored XSS issue through version 3.1.14. A logged-in user with Contributor-level access or higher could save script content that runs when someone views the affected page, if image optimization or lazy-load images is enabled. The risk is meaningful for sites with many content contributors.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation for public, multi-author WordPress sites and sites with untrusted contributors. Single-admin sites have lower practical exposure, but updating remains recommended because stored XSS can affect administrators and visitors once planted.

Technical view

CVE-2026-2352 is CWE-79 stored cross-site scripting in Autoptimize. The reported cause is insufficient sanitization in ao_metabox_save() and missing escaping when ao_post_preload is rendered into a link tag in autoptimizeImages.php. It requires authenticated Contributor+ access and specific plugin image settings. CVSS is 6.4.

Likely exposure

WordPress sites running Autoptimize up to and including 3.1.14 are potentially exposed when “Image optimization” or “Lazy-load images” is enabled and Contributor-level users can create or edit posts.

Exploitation context

No active exploitation is indicated in the provided sources, and the CVE is not listed as KEV. Exploitation requires an authenticated WordPress account with Contributor privileges or higher, reducing internet-wide unauthenticated risk but increasing concern on multi-author sites.

Researcher notes

The public references identify the vulnerable save path and render path, plus a GitHub commit and WordPress changeset associated with code changes. The provided data does not include a public exploit or KEV listing. Avoid assuming broader plugin settings or unauthenticated impact.

Mitigation direction

  • Update Autoptimize to a vendor release newer than 3.1.14 if available.
  • Review the referenced vendor commit and WordPress plugin guidance for the fixed release.
  • Temporarily disable image optimization or lazy-load images if immediate updating is not possible.
  • Restrict Contributor-level access to trusted users until remediation is complete.
  • Review suspicious post metadata after patching, especially ao_post_preload values.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory WordPress sites using Autoptimize and record plugin versions.
  • Confirm whether Autoptimize version is 3.1.14 or older.
  • Check whether image optimization or lazy-load images is enabled.
  • Review Contributor, Author, Editor, and Administrator accounts for unnecessary access.
  • Inspect affected posts for unexpected ao_post_preload metadata or unusual rendered link attributes.
