CVE-2026-23252: xfs: get rid of the xchk_xfile_*_descr calls
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
xfs: get rid of the xchk_xfile_*_descr calls
The xchk_xfile_*_descr macros call kasprintf, which can fail to allocate
memory if the formatted string is larger than 16 bytes (or whatever the
nofail guarantees are nowadays). Some of them could easily exceed that,
and Jiaming Zhang found a few places where that can happen with syzbot.
The descriptions are debugging aids and aren't required to be unique, so
let's just pass in static strings and eliminate this path to failure.
Note this patch touches a number of commits, most of which were merged
between 6.6 and 6.14.
Security readout for executives and security teams
Plain-English summary
CVE-2026-23252 is a Linux kernel XFS issue where optional debugging descriptions could trigger a memory-allocation failure. The fix replaces formatted descriptions with static strings. Business risk is unclear because the source bundle provides no CVSS score, impact class, or exploitation evidence.
Executive priority
Treat as a kernel hygiene update, not an emergency based on current evidence. Prioritize normal kernel patch cycles, with faster handling for XFS-heavy infrastructure or internet-facing multi-tenant hosts.
Technical view
In XFS online scrub code, xchk_xfile_*_descr macros used kasprintf for description strings. Oversized formatted strings could exceed allocation guarantees and fail, as found by syzbot. The kernel fix removes that failure path by using non-unique static strings.
Likely exposure
Exposure likely concerns Linux systems running affected kernels with XFS code paths present. The bundle lists Linux kernel versions but does not provide clear distro package ranges or CPEs, so asset-level exposure requires vendor mapping.
Exploitation context
The bundle says KEV is false and provides no cited evidence of active exploitation. The finding came from syzbot. No public exploit status, attacker prerequisites, or practical impact details are provided in the supplied sources.
Researcher notes
The source bundle lacks CVSS, CWE, and concrete impact beyond allocation failure. Review the stable commits and downstream advisories to determine whether the issue is denial-of-service only and which maintained kernel branches received backports.
Mitigation direction
Apply Linux kernel or distro updates carrying the referenced stable commits.
Prioritize hosts using XFS or kernel versions mapped to the affected ranges.
Check Linux distribution advisories for backported fixes and package-specific guidance.
Avoid inventing local workarounds unless your vendor recommends them.
Validation and detection
Inventory Linux kernel versions across servers, appliances, and container hosts.
Identify systems using XFS filesystems or XFS scrub functionality.
Map installed distro kernel packages to the referenced stable commits.
Confirm security scanners use vendor advisories, not only upstream version strings.
