CVE-2026-23039: drm/gud: fix NULL fb and crtc dereferences on USB disconnect
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
drm/gud: fix NULL fb and crtc dereferences on USB disconnect
On disconnect drm_atomic_helper_disable_all() is called which
sets both the fb and crtc for a plane to NULL before invoking a commit.
This causes a kernel oops on every display disconnect.
Add guards for those dereferences.
Security readout for executives and security teams
Plain-English summary
This Linux kernel issue can crash affected systems when a USB display using the drm/gud driver is disconnected. The impact appears to be denial of service, not data theft or remote compromise. Evidence points to a narrow hardware and driver path, with no cited active exploitation.
Executive priority
Treat as a targeted availability risk. Patch during normal maintenance unless affected systems are kiosks, control stations, or critical displays where a crash would disrupt operations.
Technical view
The drm/gud driver dereferenced NULL framebuffer and CRTC pointers during disconnect handling after drm_atomic_helper_disable_all() cleared plane state. The fix adds guards before those dereferences. The CVE record lists affected Linux kernel versions around 6.18 and 6.19, with stable kernel commits referenced as fixes.
Likely exposure
Exposure is most likely on Linux systems using the drm/gud USB display driver, especially desktops, kiosks, labs, or embedded systems with USB display hardware.
Exploitation context
The source describes a kernel oops on every display disconnect. KEV is false, and the bundle provides no evidence of active exploitation or remote attackability.
Researcher notes
The bundle does not provide CVSS, CWE, exploit details, or distribution-specific package status. Analysis should stay tied to the drm/gud disconnect path and the two referenced kernel stable commits.
Mitigation direction
Check vendor kernel advisories for CVE-2026-23039 coverage.
Update to a kernel build containing the referenced stable fixes.
Prioritize systems using USB display hardware or the drm/gud driver.
Avoid operational dependence on affected USB displays until patched.
Validation and detection
Inventory Linux kernel versions against the CVE affected data.
Confirm the running kernel includes the referenced stable commits.
Check whether drm/gud is loaded or USB display hardware is used.
Review system logs for kernel oops events during display disconnects.
