CVE-2026-23019: net: marvell: prestera: fix NULL dereference on devlink_alloc() failure
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
net: marvell: prestera: fix NULL dereference on devlink_alloc() failure
devlink_alloc() may return NULL on allocation failure, but
prestera_devlink_alloc() unconditionally calls devlink_priv() on
the returned pointer.
This leads to a NULL pointer dereference if devlink allocation fails.
Add a check for a NULL devlink pointer and return NULL early to avoid
the crash.
Security readout for executives and security teams
Plain-English summary
A Linux networking driver can crash the kernel if a required management object cannot be allocated, such as during resource exhaustion. The documented impact is availability loss rather than data theft or code execution. Exposure depends on whether the Marvell Prestera driver is present and used.
Executive priority
Schedule remediation through normal-to-elevated kernel maintenance, prioritizing exposed or availability-critical networking systems using Prestera. Escalate if vendor guidance identifies remotely reachable conditions. Current evidence does not justify emergency treatment across Linux systems generally.
Technical view
The Prestera driver's prestera_devlink_alloc() passes a potentially NULL result from devlink_alloc() to devlink_priv(), causing a NULL-pointer dereference. The upstream correction checks the devlink pointer and returns early. The supplied record lists affected Linux versions but provides no CVSS score or CWE classification.
Likely exposure
Likely exposure is limited to affected Linux kernels using the Marvell Prestera network driver. Triggering also requires devlink allocation failure. The bundle does not establish whether that failure is remotely inducible, and its version data contains ambiguous entries, including โ0โ and repeated commit identifiers.
Exploitation context
The source bundle marks this CVE as absent from KEV and provides no evidence of active exploitation, public exploit code, or reliable remote attackability. The demonstrated consequence is a kernel crash after allocation failure; attacker control over that condition is not established.
Researcher notes
The failure path is straightforward, but practical exploitability is insufficiently documented. Allocation failure may occur under resource pressure, yet the bundle does not prove an unprivileged or remote actor can force it. Validate reachability, backport status, and version boundaries against the relevant kernel or product advisory.
Mitigation direction
Install a vendor or distribution kernel update incorporating the applicable referenced stable fix.
Prioritize network infrastructure that loads or uses the Marvell Prestera driver.
Consult Linux and equipment-vendor advisories to confirm fixed package versions.
Where updating is delayed, assess whether the unused Prestera driver can be safely disabled.
Validation and detection
Inventory kernel versions on systems that may use Marvell Prestera networking.
Confirm whether the Prestera driver is configured, loaded, or bound to hardware.
Verify the installed kernel contains the applicable referenced stable commit or vendor backport.
Review kernel logs for NULL dereferences associated with Prestera or devlink initialization.
