CVE-2026-22854: FreeRDP has a heap-buffer-overflow in drive_process_irp_read

FreeRDP is a free implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol. Prior to 3.20.1, a heap-buffer-overflow occurs in drive read when a server-controlled read length is used to read file data into an IRP output stream buffer without a hard upper bound, allowing an oversized read to overwrite heap memory. This vulnerability is fixed in 3.20.1.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

FreeRDP clients before 3.20.1 can be memory-corrupted during drive read handling when a server controls an oversized read length. Business risk is highest for users who connect to untrusted or compromised RDP servers. The project says this is fixed in 3.20.1.

Executive priority

Treat as a timely patching item, not an emergency based on current evidence. Upgrade affected FreeRDP clients, especially where users connect to servers outside direct organizational control.

Technical view

CVE-2026-22854 is a CWE-122 heap buffer overflow in FreeRDP drive_process_irp_read. Before 3.20.1, server-controlled read length can copy file data into an IRP output stream buffer without a hard upper bound. CVSS v4.0 is 6.8 with network attack vector, high complexity, and user interaction required.

Likely exposure

Systems running FreeRDP versions earlier than 3.20.1 are affected. Exposure is client-side and depends on connecting to an RDP server capable of influencing drive read behavior.

Exploitation context

The CVE is not listed as KEV in the provided bundle, and no cited source states active exploitation. The CVSS vector indicates user interaction is required and attack complexity is high, reducing likelihood but not impact.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE record, GitHub advisory, and 3.20.1 release reference. The advisory identifies the vulnerable function and fixed version, but no exploitation-in-the-wild claim is provided in the sources.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.20.1 or later.
  • Prioritize endpoints that connect to external, unmanaged, or partner RDP servers.
  • Check operating system packages and bundled applications for embedded FreeRDP versions.
  • If immediate upgrade is not possible, follow current FreeRDP vendor guidance.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory installed FreeRDP versions across workstations, jump hosts, and packaged applications.
  • Confirm affected systems are upgraded to FreeRDP 3.20.1 or later.
  • Review package manager and vendor advisories for backported fixes.
  • Assess whether users connect FreeRDP clients to untrusted or externally managed RDP servers.
