CVE-2026-22256: Salvo is vulnerable to reflected XSS in the list_html function

Salvo is a Rust web backend framework. Prior to version 0.88.1, the function list_html generate an file view of a folder which include a render of the current path, in which its inserted in the HTML without proper sanitation, this leads to reflected XSS using the fact that request path is decoded and normalized in the matching stage but not is inserted raw in the html view (current.path), the only constraint here is for the root path (eg. /files in the PoC example) to have a sub directory (e.g common ones styles/scripts/etc…) so that the matching return the list HTML page instead of the Not Found page. This issue has been patched in version 0.88.1.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2026-22256 is a reflected cross-site scripting issue in Salvo, a Rust web backend framework. Applications using Salvo before 0.88.1 may expose users to malicious links that run attacker-controlled script in the user’s browser when directory listing HTML is generated.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation for internet-facing applications using affected Salvo versions, especially where users authenticate or handle sensitive data. The issue is high severity but requires user interaction and has no cited evidence of active exploitation in the provided sources.

Technical view

The flaw is in Salvo’s list_html function for folder views. It renders the current request path into HTML without proper sanitization after matching decoded and normalized paths. The CVSS 3.1 score is 8.8, with network attack vector, no privileges required, and user interaction required. Patched in Salvo 0.88.1.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to applications using salvo-rs Salvo versions before 0.88.1 and serving static directory listings through the affected list_html behavior. The advisory notes a constraint: the configured root path must have a subdirectory so the directory listing page is returned rather than Not Found.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not indicate active exploitation, and the CVE is not marked KEV. Exploitation requires a user to interact with a crafted URL or request path that reaches the directory listing page. Business impact is mainly browser-side compromise, including potential data theft or session abuse within the affected application context.

Researcher notes

The key condition is unsafe insertion of current.path into generated directory listing HTML. Sources identify CWE-79 and CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:L/A:L. Avoid assuming broader Salvo impact beyond versions before 0.88.1 and the described list_html directory listing behavior.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade Salvo to version 0.88.1 or later.
  • Identify applications using salvo-rs Salvo before 0.88.1.
  • Review whether static directory listing functionality is enabled.
  • Check the GitHub advisory for any updated vendor guidance.
  • Consider disabling directory listings where they are not required.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Rust applications and dependency manifests for Salvo versions.
  • Confirm deployed builds include Salvo 0.88.1 or later.
  • Review routes serving static files with directory listing behavior.
  • Test safely in a non-production environment for reflected path rendering.
  • Monitor vendor advisory and CVE record for updates.
