CVE-2026-1995: IDrive Cloud Backup Client for Windows contains a privilege escalation vulnerability
In versions before 7.0.0.64, IDrive’s id_service.exe process runs with elevated privileges and regularly reads from several files under the C:\ProgramData\IDrive\ directory. The UTF16-LE encoded contents of these files are used as arguments for starting a process, but they can be edited by any standard user logged into the system. An attacker can overwrite or edit the files to specify a path to an arbitrary executable, which will then be executed by the id_service.exe process with SYSTEM privileges.
Security readout for executives and security teams
Plain-English summary
IDrive Cloud Backup Client for Windows before 7.0.0.64 can let a normal logged-in user gain SYSTEM-level control on that machine. The weakness is local, but serious where IDrive is deployed on workstations or servers because SYSTEM privileges can disable controls, access protected data, or support wider compromise.
Executive priority
Treat this as a near-term endpoint remediation item. It is not remotely exploitable from the cited material, but it can turn any local foothold into full machine control where vulnerable IDrive clients remain installed.
Technical view
The elevated id_service.exe process regularly reads user-editable UTF-16LE files under C:\ProgramData\IDrive\. Their contents are used as process-start arguments. A low-privileged local user can alter those files so id_service.exe runs an attacker-chosen executable as SYSTEM. This is CWE-269 privilege escalation with CVSS 3.1 score 7.8.
Likely exposure
Exposure is limited to Windows systems running IDrive Cloud Backup Client versions before 7.0.0.64. The bundle does not identify non-Windows clients, server editions, or other IDrive products as affected.
Exploitation context
The bundle reports no CISA KEV listing and provides no evidence of active exploitation. Exploitation requires local authenticated access, low complexity, and no user interaction, making it relevant after phishing, malware footholds, or misuse by an insider account.
Researcher notes
Key conditions are AV:L, AC:L, PR:L, UI:N, S:U, with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. The source bundle does not name specific writable filenames, exploit availability, or detailed vendor mitigations beyond the fixed version boundary.
Mitigation direction
Upgrade affected Windows clients to IDrive Cloud Backup Client 7.0.0.64 or later.
Check IDrive and CERT/CC guidance for any additional vendor-recommended controls.
Prioritize endpoints where standard users log in and IDrive runs persistently.
Monitor for unexpected SYSTEM child processes spawned by id_service.exe.
Reduce unnecessary local user access on systems running vulnerable clients.
Validation and detection
Inventory Windows endpoints for IDrive Cloud Backup Client installations.
Confirm each installation is version 7.0.0.64 or later.
Review permissions on C:\ProgramData\IDrive\ for standard-user write access.
Inspect endpoint telemetry for unusual id_service.exe process launches.
Verify vulnerable versions are absent from gold images and software deployment baselines.

CWE-269: Authorization and privilege behavior lookup
Authorization weaknesses can support privilege escalation and valid-account review, depending on exploit path. Open the exact CWE lookup page first, then review the ATT&CK searches from that MITRE weakness context. This is a Glexia lookup hint, not an official ATT&CK mapping.
The CVE wording references privilege impact, so privilege escalation and authorization behavior review may help. This is a Glexia inferred lookup path, not an official MITRE, ATT&CK, or CVE Program mapping.
