CVE-2026-0693: Allow HTML in Category Descriptions <= 1.2.4 - Authenticated (Administrator+) Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Category Descriptions

The Allow HTML in Category Descriptions plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via category descriptions in all versions up to, and including, 1.2.4. This is due to the plugin unconditionally removing the `wp_kses_data` output filter for term_description, link_description, link_notes, and user_description fields without checking user capabilities. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with administrator-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in category descriptions that will execute whenever a user accesses a page where the category description is displayed. This only affects multi-site installations and installations where unfiltered_html has been disabled.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

A WordPress plugin can let site administrators store unsafe HTML/script in category descriptions. This can run in visitors’ browsers when affected descriptions are displayed. The risk is limited because it requires administrator-level access and only applies to multisite or sites where unfiltered_html is disabled.

Executive priority

Handle in normal vulnerability remediation cycles unless the plugin is used on shared multisite environments with many administrators. Prioritize if admin accounts are broadly delegated or poorly controlled.

Technical view

CVE-2026-0693 is stored XSS in Allow HTML in Category Descriptions up to 1.2.4. The plugin removes WordPress sanitization filters for description fields without capability checks, including term_description. CVSS 3.1 is 4.4. CWE-79 applies.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to WordPress sites using this plugin at version 1.2.4 or earlier, specifically multisite deployments or configurations where unfiltered_html is disabled.

Exploitation context

Sources state exploitation requires authenticated administrator-level access or higher. No provided source or KEV entry indicates active exploitation. Impact is browser-side script execution where affected category descriptions render.

Researcher notes

The source bundle does not identify a fixed version. The structured affected data is sparse, but the narrative and Wordfence reference identify versions up to and including 1.2.4.

Mitigation direction

  • Check WordPress plugin/vendor guidance for an updated version or official remediation.
  • Disable or remove the plugin if HTML category descriptions are not required.
  • Limit administrator access to trusted users only.
  • Audit category descriptions for unexpected HTML or script content.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory WordPress sites for Allow HTML in Category Descriptions.
  • Identify plugin versions at or below 1.2.4.
  • Confirm whether WordPress multisite is enabled.
  • Confirm whether unfiltered_html is disabled.
  • Review category description content and relevant admin activity logs.
