CVE-2025-21847: ASoC: SOF: stream-ipc: Check for cstream nullity in sof_ipc_msg_data()
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
ASoC: SOF: stream-ipc: Check for cstream nullity in sof_ipc_msg_data()
The nullity of sps->cstream should be checked similarly as it is done in
sof_set_stream_data_offset() function.
Assuming that it is not NULL if sps->stream is NULL is incorrect and can
lead to NULL pointer dereference.
Security readout for executives and security teams
Plain-English summary
CVE-2025-21847 is a Linux kernel availability flaw in the Sound Open Firmware audio path. A local low-privileged user could trigger a NULL pointer dereference, potentially causing a system crash. The CVE record does not show active exploitation or remote attack capability.
Executive priority
Treat as routine-to-priority patching for Linux endpoints or shared systems, not an emergency internet-exposed issue. Escalate where a crash could disrupt critical workloads or where many untrusted local users share the same host.
Technical view
The issue is CWE-476 in ASoC SOF stream IPC. sof_ipc_msg_data() failed to check sps->cstream for NULL, incorrectly assuming it was valid when sps->stream was NULL. The CVSS vector is local, low complexity, low privilege, no user interaction, with high availability impact only.
Likely exposure
Exposure is most relevant to Linux systems running affected kernel versions with the ASoC SOF audio code present. The bundle does not identify downstream distro package names, cloud images, appliances, or specific hardware models.
Exploitation context
The source bundle says KEV is false and provides no cited evidence of active exploitation. The CVSS vector indicates local authenticated access is required. This is mainly a denial-of-service concern, not a confidentiality or integrity issue based on the provided scoring.
Researcher notes
The strongest evidence is the CVE record and Linux stable commit references. Affected range details in the bundle are limited and should be reconciled with vendor advisories. Do not infer exploit availability, affected distributions, or mitigations beyond the provided sources.
Mitigation direction
Update to a vendor kernel containing the listed stable fixes.
Check distribution advisories for backported fixes before relying on version numbers alone.
Prioritize shared or multi-user Linux systems where local users are untrusted.
If no patch is available, follow vendor guidance; no workaround is named in the sources.
Validation and detection
Inventory Linux kernel versions across affected assets.
Confirm whether the vendor kernel includes one of the referenced stable fixes or a backport.
Identify systems using ASoC SOF audio functionality or related kernel modules.
Review whether local untrusted users can access affected systems.

These fields come from the CVE record and ADP containers, not from Glexia's Take. They preserve time-varying source decisions such as CISA SSVC, KEV status, CVSS metrics, and provider references.
We collect every scored CVSS vector available in the official CNA and ADP containers. When more than one version is present, the table keeps the source vectors side by side instead of collapsing them into the highest score.
