CVE-2024-8957: PTZOptics NDI and SDI Cameras Command Injection via NTP Address Configuration

PTZOptics PT30X-SDI/NDI-xx before firmware 6.3.40 is vulnerable to an OS command injection issue. The camera does not sufficiently validate the ntp_addr configuration value which may lead to arbitrary command execution when ntp_client is started. When chained with CVE-2024-8956, a remote and unauthenticated attacker can execute arbitrary OS commands on affected devices.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

PTZOptics PT30X-SDI/NDI cameras before firmware 6.3.40 can be made to run operating-system commands through an unsafe NTP address setting. By itself the CVSS vector assumes high privileges, but sources state it can become remote unauthenticated command execution when chained with CVE-2024-8956.

Executive priority

Treat this as urgent for affected cameras because CISA lists it as exploited and chaining can remove authentication barriers. Prioritize internet-exposed or production streaming environments first, then complete firmware and access-control validation across the fleet.

Technical view

CVE-2024-8957 is CWE-78 command injection in the ntp_addr configuration value used when ntp_client starts. Affected PTZOptics PT30X-SDI/NDI-xx cameras before firmware 6.3.40 may allow arbitrary OS command execution. The public record assigns CVSS 3.1 score 7.2 with network access, low complexity, high privileges, and high CIA impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to organizations using PTZOptics PT30X-SDI or PT30X-NDI camera models on firmware older than 6.3.40. Risk rises sharply if camera administration interfaces are reachable from untrusted networks or if CVE-2024-8956 is also present.

Exploitation context

CISA KEV listing indicates known exploitation. GreyNoise sources describe zero-day RCE research involving live-streaming cameras, and the advisory tags include exploit and technical-description. The bundle does not provide enough detail to assess current campaign scale, targeting, or exploit reliability.

Researcher notes

The key uncertainty is exploit context: the bundle confirms KEV status and chained unauthenticated RCE potential, but not campaign scale. Validate firmware, network reachability, and coexistence with CVE-2024-8956. Avoid assuming other PTZOptics models are affected without vendor evidence.

Mitigation direction

  • Check PTZOptics firmware guidance for CVE-2024-8957 and related fixes.
  • Update affected PT30X-SDI/NDI cameras to firmware 6.3.40 or later.
  • Remove camera management interfaces from internet and untrusted network access.
  • Restrict administrative access to trusted management networks and accounts.
  • Prioritize remediation where CVE-2024-8956 may also be present.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory PTZOptics PT30X-SDI and PT30X-NDI devices.
  • Record firmware versions and flag anything before 6.3.40.
  • Confirm whether management interfaces are reachable from untrusted networks.
  • Review configuration history for unexpected NTP address changes.
  • Review device logs for abnormal ntp_client behavior or unexplained command execution indicators.
