CVE-2024-50603: An issue was discovered in Aviatrix Controller before 7.1.4191 and 7.2.x before 7.2.4996.

An issue was discovered in Aviatrix Controller before 7.1.4191 and 7.2.x before 7.2.4996. Due to the improper neutralization of special elements used in an OS command, an unauthenticated attacker is able to execute arbitrary code. Shell metacharacters can be sent to /v1/api in cloud_type for list_flightpath_destination_instances, or src_cloud_type for flightpath_connection_test.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2024-50603 is a critical remote code execution flaw in Aviatrix Controller. An unauthenticated network attacker can abuse improper command handling and run arbitrary code. Because CISA lists it in KEV, organizations should treat exposed affected controllers as a current business risk, not a theoretical issue.

Executive priority

Immediate remediation is warranted. This is unauthenticated remote code execution on a network controller with confirmed KEV status, so delay increases the chance of compromise and operational disruption.

Technical view

The issue is CWE-78 OS command injection in Aviatrix Controller before 7.1.4191 and 7.2.x before 7.2.4996. The CVE description identifies /v1/api handling of cloud_type for list_flightpath_destination_instances and src_cloud_type for flightpath_connection_test. CVSS is 10.0 with network, low complexity, no privileges, and no user interaction.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely where Aviatrix Controller versions are below 7.1.4191 or 7.2.4996 and the controller API is network reachable. Internet-reachable controllers are the highest priority to identify, but internal reachability still matters because exploitation requires no authentication.

Exploitation context

Active exploitation is supported by the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities listing. Public research also describes the command injection vulnerability, but this assessment does not rely on or provide offensive reproduction details.

Researcher notes

Evidence is strong for affected version ranges, vulnerability class, attack vector, and exploitation status. The provided sources do not establish affected configurations beyond Aviatrix Controller or name additional products. Validate defensively through version, exposure, and log review, not exploit testing.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade affected 7.1 deployments to 7.1.4191 or later.
  • Upgrade affected 7.2 deployments to 7.2.4996 or later.
  • Prioritize internet-reachable controllers before lower-exposure instances.
  • Restrict controller API network access to trusted administrative paths.
  • Review Aviatrix PSIRT guidance before applying compensating controls.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory all Aviatrix Controller instances and record exact versions.
  • Confirm no controller remains below 7.1.4191 or 7.2.4996.
  • Check whether controller API access is reachable from untrusted networks.
  • Review logs for suspicious unauthenticated API activity around affected functions.
  • Track remediation evidence against CISA KEV requirements if applicable.

Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection')

Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection') represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
