The ct may be dropped if a clash has been resolved but is still passed to
the tcf_ct_flow_table_process_conn function for further usage. This issue
can be fixed by retrieving ct from skb again after confirming conntrack.
Security readout for executives and security teams
Plain-English summary
CVE-2024-41040 is a Linux kernel use-after-free bug in network traffic-control conntrack handling. It can cause the kernel to reuse freed memory after resolving a conntrack clash. The bundle does not provide CVSS, impact class, or active exploitation evidence, so urgency depends on whether affected kernel versions and this networking path are present.
Executive priority
Schedule remediation in the next regular kernel patch cycle, faster for exposed network infrastructure. There is no provided evidence of active exploitation, but kernel memory-safety bugs in packet paths can carry operational risk.
Technical view
The issue is in net/sched act_ct processing. After conntrack confirmation resolves a clash, the conntrack object may be dropped but still passed to tcf_ct_flow_table_process_conn, producing a KASAN slab-use-after-free. The described fix retrieves ct from skb again after conntrack confirmation.
Likely exposure
Likely exposure is Linux systems running affected kernel builds where traffic control, cls_flower, act_ct, and conntrack paths are used. Network appliances, container hosts, and routing/firewall systems deserve priority review. The supplied version data is incomplete enough that vendor kernel advisories should be treated as authoritative.
Exploitation context
The bundle reports a KASAN-discovered use-after-free and stable kernel fixes. It does not cite public exploitation, proof-of-concept activity, or CISA KEV listing. Do not treat this as known exploited based on the provided evidence.
Researcher notes
Focus analysis on the conntrack clash path through tcf_ct_act, nf_ct_resolve_clash, and tcf_ct_flow_table_process_conn. The evidence supports memory reuse after object drop, but not exploitability level, required privileges, or remote triggerability.
Mitigation direction
Apply vendor kernel updates that include the referenced stable Linux fixes.
Check Debian LTS guidance if running affected Debian kernel packages.
Prioritize systems using tc flower, act_ct, conntrack, routing, or firewall workloads.
If unable to patch, request supported workarounds from the kernel or distribution vendor.
Validation and detection
Inventory running kernel versions and compare them with vendor advisories for CVE-2024-41040.
Check whether tc flower, act_ct, and conntrack are used on exposed systems.
Confirm patched kernels include one of the referenced stable commits or vendor backports.
Review kernel logs for related KASAN, UAF, or networking crash reports where available.
