CVE-2024-39717: The Versa Director GUI provides an option to customize the look and feel of the user interface.

The Versa Director GUI provides an option to customize the look and feel of the user interface. This option is only available for a user logged with Provider-Data-Center-Admin or Provider-Data-Center-System-Admin. (Tenant level users do not have this privilege). The “Change Favicon” (Favorite Icon) option can be mis-used to upload a malicious file ending with .png extension to masquerade as image file. This is possible only after a user with Provider-Data-Center-Admin or Provider-Data-Center-System-Admin has successfully authenticated and logged in.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Versa Director lets high-privilege provider administrators change the GUI favicon. In affected versions, that feature can be abused to upload a malicious file disguised with a .png extension. It requires successful privileged authentication, but CISA lists the CVE as known exploited, making this more urgent than a typical medium-scored issue.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority remediation item despite its medium CVSS score. The affected product is a network management platform, the potential impact is broad, and CISA KEV confirms exploitation. Prioritize patching, privileged account review, and access restriction.

Technical view

CVE-2024-39717 is a CWE-434 dangerous file upload issue in Versa Director. The vulnerable Change Favicon function is limited to Provider-Data-Center-Admin or Provider-Data-Center-System-Admin users. The CVSS is 6.6 with high privileges and high complexity, but confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts are all rated high.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in organizations running Versa Director 21.2.2, 21.2.3 before 2024-06-21, 22.1.1, 22.1.2 before 2024-06-21, or 22.1.3 before 2024-06-21. Tenant-level users are not identified as having the vulnerable privilege.

Exploitation context

Active exploitation is supported by CISA KEV listing for CVE-2024-39717. The source bundle does not provide exploit volume, threat actor attribution, or technical intrusion details. Exploitation requires an authenticated Provider-Data-Center administrator role, so credential compromise or misuse is a key concern.

Researcher notes

Evidence is strongest for affected versions, privilege requirements, CWE classification, CVSS vector, and KEV status. The provided sources do not include exploit mechanics, indicators of compromise, or full remediation instructions beyond version/date context and vendor guidance.

Mitigation direction

  • Apply Versa vendor guidance for affected Director versions immediately.
  • Upgrade affected branches to fixed builds dated 2024-06-21 or later where applicable.
  • Restrict Director GUI access to trusted administrative networks.
  • Review and reduce Provider-Data-Center-Admin and System-Admin assignments.
  • Monitor privileged account activity and unexpected GUI customization changes.
  • Follow CISA KEV-driven remediation timelines if applicable.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory all Versa Director instances and record exact versions.
  • Confirm whether any affected version listed in the CVE source is deployed.
  • Review privileged administrator accounts for necessity and recent changes.
  • Check audit logs for Change Favicon activity or unexpected uploads.
  • Verify the deployed build aligns with Versa’s bulletin guidance.
  • Document any compensating controls around Director GUI access.
