CVE-2024-38601: ring-buffer: Fix a race between readers and resize checks
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
ring-buffer: Fix a race between readers and resize checks
The reader code in rb_get_reader_page() swaps a new reader page into the
ring buffer by doing cmpxchg on old->list.prev->next to point it to the
new page. Following that, if the operation is successful,
old->list.next->prev gets updated too. This means the underlying
doubly-linked list is temporarily inconsistent, page->prev->next or
page->next->prev might not be equal back to page for some page in the
ring buffer.
The resize operation in ring_buffer_resize() can be invoked in parallel.
It calls rb_check_pages() which can detect the described inconsistency
and stop further tracing:

Note that ring_buffer_resize() calls rb_check_pages() only if the parent
trace_buffer has recording disabled. Recent commit d78ab792705c
("tracing: Stop current tracer when resizing buffer") causes that it is
now always the case which makes it more likely to experience this issue.
The window to hit this race is nonetheless very small. To help
reproducing it, one can add a delay loop in rb_get_reader_page():
ret = rb_head_page_replace(reader, cpu_buffer->reader_page);
if (!ret)
goto spin;
for (unsigned i = 0; i < 1U << 26; i++) /* inserted delay loop */
__asm__ __volatile__ ("" : : : "memory");
rb_list_head(reader->list.next)->prev = &cpu_buffer->reader_page->list;

Security readout for executives and security teams
Plain-English summary
This Linux kernel issue is a race in the tracing ring buffer. Under a narrow timing window, resizing the buffer while readers swap pages can make internal list checks fail and stop tracing. The main business risk is loss of kernel tracing and observability, not confirmed remote compromise.
Executive priority
Treat as a routine-to-priority kernel maintenance item, higher for observability-critical systems. There is no sourced evidence of active exploitation, but losing tracing can impair incident response and troubleshooting.
Technical view
rb_get_reader_page() temporarily leaves the ring buffer doubly linked list inconsistent during a page swap. ring_buffer_resize() can concurrently call rb_check_pages(), detect that transient state, warn, and stop tracing. The source says the race window is very small but became more likely after resizing now stops the current tracer.
Likely exposure
Exposure is limited to Linux systems running affected kernel builds with tracing ring-buffer resize activity. The bundle lists Linux kernel versions and multiple stable commits, but distro-specific package status must be checked through vendor advisories.
Exploitation context
CISA KEV status is false in the bundle, and no cited source claims active exploitation. The provided description frames this as a hard-to-hit race causing tracing disruption, with reproduction aided by an artificial delay in kernel code.
Researcher notes
The issue is in ring-buffer reader page replacement versus resize consistency checks. Evidence supports an availability or operational observability impact. The bundle lacks CVSS, CWE, privilege requirements, and distro-specific fixed package versions, so validation should rely on kernel and vendor advisory mapping.
Mitigation direction
Apply Linux kernel updates containing the referenced stable fixes.
Check Debian or distro advisories for backported kernel package status.
Prioritize hosts relying on kernel tracing for operations or incident response.
Avoid direct wrangler or deploy assumptions; follow vendor kernel update guidance.
Validation and detection
Inventory Linux kernel versions across managed hosts.
Map each kernel package to vendor advisories and stable fix commits.
Check logs for rb_check_pages warnings or stopped tracing symptoms.
Confirm tracing workloads continue after kernel update in staging.
