CVE-2024-0604: Best WordPress Gallery Plugin – FooGallery <= 2.4.7 -Authenticated(Administrator+) Stored Cross-Site Scripting via settings

The Best WordPress Gallery Plugin – FooGallery plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via admin settings in all versions up to, and including, 2.4.7 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with administrator-level permissions and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This only affects multi-site installations and installations where unfiltered_html has been disabled.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

FooGallery for WordPress allowed a site administrator to save script content in plugin settings when versions up to 2.4.7 were used. The script could later run for visitors to affected pages. This is mainly a governance and compromised-admin risk, not a low-privilege takeover issue.

Executive priority

Handle in normal patch cadence unless the site has many administrators, recent admin compromise concerns, or strict content-integrity requirements. The vulnerability is real but constrained by administrator-level access and specific WordPress configurations.

Technical view

CVE-2024-0604 is stored cross-site scripting in FooGallery admin settings caused by insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. It requires authenticated Administrator-level privileges or higher, has high attack complexity, and only affects multisite installs or installs where unfiltered_html is disabled.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to WordPress sites running FooGallery 2.4.7 or earlier in the affected configurations: multisite or unfiltered_html disabled. Single-site deployments with normal administrator unfiltered_html behavior may not be affected based on the source bundle.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show active exploitation, and KEV status is false. Practical abuse requires an administrator-level account, making the main concern compromised admins, delegated admin access, or environments where many administrators manage content.

Researcher notes

The record identifies CWE-79 with CVSS 3.1 score 4.4: AV:N/AC:H/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N. Evidence is sufficient for affected-version and prerequisite assessment, but the bundle does not provide exploit telemetry or detailed patch analysis.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade FooGallery to a version newer than 2.4.7 per plugin guidance.
  • Audit administrator accounts and remove unnecessary elevated WordPress access.
  • Review FooGallery settings for unexpected script-like content.
  • Check vendor and WordPress plugin advisories for confirmed fixed release details.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory WordPress sites using the FooGallery plugin.
  • Confirm installed FooGallery versions and flag 2.4.7 or earlier.
  • Identify multisite deployments and sites where unfiltered_html is disabled.
  • Review recent administrator changes to FooGallery settings.
  • Check whether vendor guidance maps the site version to a fixed release.
