CVE-2023-6988: Colibri Page Builder <= 1.0.239 - Authenticated (Contributor+) Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Shortcode

The Colibri Page Builder plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the plugin's extend_builder_render_js shortcode in all versions up to, and including, 1.0.239 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user supplied attributes. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers with contributor-level and above permissions to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This vulnerability lets a logged-in WordPress user with Contributor or higher privileges store malicious script content through Colibri Page Builder. The script can run when someone visits the affected page. It is not remotely exploitable without an account, but it can expose admin sessions or site users if low-trust authors exist.

Executive priority

Treat this as a moderate-priority WordPress application risk. Prioritize sites with public registration, many content contributors, contractors, or recent account compromise concerns. Patch during the next normal security maintenance window unless untrusted Contributor-level users exist, which raises urgency.

Technical view

CVE-2023-6988 is stored cross-site scripting in Colibri Page Builder through the extend_builder_render_js shortcode. Versions up to and including 1.0.239 insufficiently sanitize user-supplied shortcode attributes and insufficiently escape output. The CVSS 3.1 score is 6.4 with low privileges required, changed scope, and low confidentiality and integrity impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to WordPress sites running Colibri Page Builder version 1.0.239 or older where Contributor-level or higher accounts are available to attackers or untrusted users.

Exploitation context

The bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation evidence. Abuse requires authenticated access at Contributor level or above, then a victim visiting an injected page. Stored XSS can matter more on sites with many authors, compromised accounts, or shared editorial workflows.

Researcher notes

The key evidence is Wordfence’s advisory and the WordPress plugin repository references. The source bundle identifies the vulnerable shortcode and root cause but does not provide active exploitation evidence. Avoid assuming broader product impact beyond Colibri Page Builder up to and including 1.0.239.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory WordPress sites using Colibri Page Builder.
  • Update Colibri Page Builder beyond 1.0.239 when vendor guidance confirms a fixed release.
  • Restrict Contributor and higher roles to trusted users only.
  • Review existing pages using the affected shortcode for suspicious content.
  • Check vendor and WordPress plugin guidance for any additional remediation.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm installed Colibri Page Builder versions across managed WordPress sites.
  • Identify sites with Contributor, Author, Editor, or Administrator accounts outside trusted staff.
  • Search content for extend_builder_render_js shortcode usage.
  • Review recent posts or pages created by low-trust authenticated users.
  • Verify updated plugin code includes appropriate sanitization and output escaping.
