CVE-2023-6266: Backup Migration <= 1.3.6 - Unauthenticated Arbitrary Backup Download to Sensitive Information Exposure

The Backup Migration plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to unauthorized access of data due to insufficient path and file validation on the BMI_BACKUP case of the handle_downloading function in all versions up to, and including, 1.3.6. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to download back-up files which can contain sensitive information such as user passwords, PII, database credentials, and much more.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

A vulnerable WordPress backup plugin could let anyone on the internet download site backup files. Those backups may contain database credentials, user passwords, PII, and other sensitive business data. The main risk is confidentiality loss, not direct site takeover from the vulnerability itself.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority confidentiality incident risk for any affected WordPress site. Backup files can expose credentials and regulated data, creating downstream compromise and notification risk even without direct code execution.

Technical view

CVE-2023-6266 is a CWE-200 issue in Backup Migration/BackupBliss for WordPress through version 1.3.6. Insufficient path and file validation in the BMI_BACKUP case of handle_downloading allowed unauthenticated arbitrary backup download. CVSS 3.1 is 7.5, driven by network access, low complexity, no privileges, and high confidentiality impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to WordPress sites running the affected Backup Migration/BackupBliss plugin through 1.3.6. The bundle’s affected-product metadata is inconsistent, so teams should verify installed plugin slug, name, and version directly on each WordPress instance.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or other cited evidence of active exploitation. However, the weakness is remotely reachable, unauthenticated, low complexity, and targets backup files that commonly contain high-value secrets and personal data.

Researcher notes

The public record attributes the issue to insufficient validation in handle_downloading, specifically the BMI_BACKUP case. References compare affected 1.3.5 code with 1.3.7-era code. Evidence supports sensitive information exposure; it does not support integrity or availability impact.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade the plugin beyond version 1.3.6, preferably to current vendor-supported release.
  • If upgrade is blocked, disable the plugin pending vendor guidance.
  • Remove publicly reachable backup archives from web-accessible paths.
  • Rotate database credentials and other secrets if backup exposure is suspected.
  • Review WordPress and web server logs for unusual backup download activity.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory all WordPress sites for the plugin name, slug, and installed version.
  • Confirm no production site runs Backup Migration/BackupBliss version 1.3.6 or earlier.
  • Check backup storage locations for internet-accessible archives.
  • Review access logs for unauthenticated backup file downloads.
  • Verify sensitive credentials in backups have been rotated after suspected exposure.
