CVE-2023-5841: OpenEXR Heap Overflow in Scanline Deep Data Parsing

Due to a failure in validating the number of scanline samples of a OpenEXR file containing deep scanline data, Academy Software Foundation OpenEX image parsing library version 3.2.1 and prior is susceptible to a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability. This issue was resolved as of versions v3.2.2 and v3.1.12 of the affected library.

Security readout for executives and security teams

OpenEXR versions 3.2.1 and earlier can mishandle specially crafted deep scanline EXR image data, causing a heap overflow. The main business risk is to services or creative pipelines that automatically ingest or render untrusted EXR files. Fixed releases are available. Exposure is most likely in media, rendering, asset-processing, security scanning, or web services that parse OpenEXR files using Academy Software Foundation OpenEXR 3.2.1 or earlier. Bundled library copies may remain vulnerable even when OS packages are updated. Treat as high-priority where EXR files enter automated workflows or customer-facing upload paths. The issue has a critical score and fixed versions exist, but the provided sources do not establish active exploitation. Mitigation focus: Upgrade OpenEXR to v3.2.2, v3.1.12, or a later supported release.; Apply Fedora or operating system security updates where OpenEXR is packaged.; Inventory applications and containers for bundled or statically linked OpenEXR copies..
