CVE-2023-53315: wifi: ath11k: Fix SKB corruption in REO destination ring
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
wifi: ath11k: Fix SKB corruption in REO destination ring
While running traffics for a long time, randomly an RX descriptor
filled with value "0" from REO destination ring is received.
This descriptor which is invalid causes the wrong SKB (SKB stored in
the IDR lookup with buffer id "0") to be fetched which in turn
causes SKB memory corruption issue and the same leads to crash
after some time.
Changed the start id for idr allocation to "1" and the buffer id "0"
is reserved for error validation. Introduced Sanity check to validate
the descriptor, before processing the SKB.

Security readout for executives and security teams
Plain-English summary
CVE-2023-53315 is a Linux kernel Wi-Fi driver flaw that can corrupt memory and crash the system. It affects the ath11k driver path when an invalid receive descriptor is processed during long-running traffic. The documented impact is availability loss, not data theft or privilege escalation.
Executive priority
Treat this as a moderate availability risk for affected Linux Wi-Fi devices. It is most urgent where wireless uptime matters, such as managed access points, embedded systems, or edge devices. No source indicates active exploitation.
Technical view
In ath11k RX processing, a zeroed REO destination ring descriptor could cause buffer ID 0 to fetch the wrong SKB from IDR, leading to SKB memory corruption and a kernel crash. The fix reserves buffer ID 0, starts allocations at 1, and validates descriptors before SKB processing.
Likely exposure
Exposure is most likely on Linux systems using the ath11k Wi-Fi driver, especially Qualcomm hardware matching the tested IPQ8074 context. The source lists affected Linux kernel version data and stable kernel commits, but distro-specific package status is not provided.
Exploitation context
The CVSS vector is local, low complexity, low privileges, no user interaction, with high availability impact. The source bundle says KEV is false and provides no evidence of active exploitation or public weaponization.
Researcher notes
The evidence supports a kernel crash caused by invalid RX descriptor handling, not confidentiality or integrity impact. The CVE data includes stable commit references but not distribution advisories, exploit reports, or complete product mapping.
Mitigation direction
Map deployed kernels to vendor advisories and the referenced stable kernel commits.
Update affected Linux kernels to packages containing the ath11k REO destination ring fix.
Prioritize systems using ath11k Wi-Fi hardware in production or managed network appliances.
If packages are unavailable, follow Linux distribution or device-vendor backport guidance.
Validation and detection
Inventory systems with loaded ath11k or ath11k_pci modules.
Check kernel versions against vendor-fixed packages and referenced stable commits.
Review crash logs for ath11k_dp_process_rx or REO destination ring symptoms.
Confirm post-update kernels include the buffer ID reservation and descriptor validation fix.

These fields come from the CVE record and ADP containers, not from Glexia's Take. They preserve time-varying source decisions such as CISA SSVC, KEV status, CVSS metrics, and provider references.
We collect every scored CVSS vector available in the official CNA and ADP containers. When more than one version is present, the table keeps the source vectors side by side instead of collapsing them into the highest score.
