CVE-2023-37474: Path traversal in copyparty

Copyparty is a portable file server. Versions prior to 1.8.2 are subject to a path traversal vulnerability detected in the `.cpr` subfolder. The Path Traversal attack technique allows an attacker access to files, directories, and commands that reside outside the web document root directory. This issue has been addressed in commit `043e3c7d` which has been included in release 1.8.2. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Copyparty before 1.8.2 can let a remote, unauthenticated attacker read files outside the intended web directory through path traversal in the .cpr subfolder. The main business risk is unauthorized disclosure of sensitive files from exposed file servers. The vendor fixed it in 1.8.2 and states there are no known workarounds. Exposure is likely where copyparty instances older than 1.8.2 are reachable by untrusted users, especially internet-facing portable file servers. The source bundle does not identify affected configurations beyond the .cpr subfolder issue. Prioritize remediation for any public or partner-accessible copyparty server. The flaw is easy to reach remotely and primarily threatens confidentiality, which can create data exposure risk without requiring credentials. Mitigation focus: Upgrade copyparty to version 1.8.2 or later.; Review the GitHub advisory and release notes for vendor guidance.; Treat older internet-facing instances as urgent upgrade candidates..

Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal') represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
