CVE-2023-34362: In Progress MOVEit Transfer before 2021.0.6 (13.0.6), 2021.1.4 (13.1.4), 2022.0.4 (14.0.4), 2022.1.5 (14.1....

In Progress MOVEit Transfer before 2021.0.6 (13.0.6), 2021.1.4 (13.1.4), 2022.0.4 (14.0.4), 2022.1.5 (14.1.5), and 2023.0.1 (15.0.1), a SQL injection vulnerability has been found in the MOVEit Transfer web application that could allow an unauthenticated attacker to gain access to MOVEit Transfer's database. Depending on the database engine being used (MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, or Azure SQL), an attacker may be able to infer information about the structure and contents of the database, and execute SQL statements that alter or delete database elements. NOTE: this is exploited in the wild in May and June 2023; exploitation of unpatched systems can occur via HTTP or HTTPS. All versions (e.g., 2020.0 and 2019x) before the five explicitly mentioned versions are affected, including older unsupported versions.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2023-34362 is a critical SQL injection flaw in Progress MOVEit Transfer. An unauthenticated attacker could access the application database and potentially read, change, or delete data. CISA lists it as known exploited, and the CVE notes exploitation in May and June 2023. Highest exposure is any internet-accessible MOVEit Transfer server running a version older than the fixed releases. Older unsupported 2020.0 and 2019x releases are explicitly affected. Internal-only deployments still matter because database confidentiality, integrity, and availability are in scope if reached. This should be handled as an emergency remediation and exposure-assessment item. The issue affects a managed file transfer product commonly used for sensitive data, requires no authentication, has full CIA impact, and is confirmed exploited. Patch status and compromise review should be reported to leadership. Mitigation focus: Upgrade MOVEit Transfer to a vendor-fixed release or latest supported release after confirming deployment version.; Follow Progress advisory guidance for impacted, unsupported, or internet-facing MOVEit Transfer systems.; Isolate exposed instances until patched and reviewed if immediate upgrade is not possible..

Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an SQL Command ('SQL Injection') represents a recurring weakness pattern that can create exploitable paths when design, validation, or implementation controls are missing.
