Atlassian has been made aware of an issue reported by a handful of customers where external attackers may have exploited a previously unknown vulnerability in publicly accessible Confluence Data Center and Server instances to create unauthorized Confluence administrator accounts and access Confluence instances. Atlassian Cloud sites are not affected by this vulnerability. If your Confluence site is accessed via an atlassian.net domain, it is hosted by Atlassian and is not vulnerable to this issue.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2023-22515 lets unauthenticated external attackers compromise publicly reachable Atlassian Confluence Data Center or Server instances by creating unauthorized administrator accounts. Atlassian Cloud sites on atlassian.net are not affected. Because administrator access can expose sensitive wiki content and control the application, this is a board-level incident risk. Highest exposure is internet-facing Confluence Data Center or Server. Internal-only instances still matter if reachable from untrusted networks. Atlassian Cloud at atlassian.net is explicitly not affected. Treat this as an emergency for any self-managed Confluence. Internet-facing systems should be remediated or isolated immediately, then investigated for unauthorized administrator creation and data access. Mitigation focus: Identify all Confluence Server and Data Center instances.; Prioritize publicly accessible instances for immediate action.; Apply Atlassian’s recommended fixed version or mitigation..
