CVE-2023-22045: Vulnerability in the Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition, Oracle GraalVM for JDK product of O...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition, Oracle GraalVM for JDK product of Oracle Java SE (component: Hotspot). Supported versions that are affected are Oracle Java SE: 8u371, 8u371-perf, 11.0.19, 17.0.7, 20.0.1; Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition: 20.3.10, 21.3.6, 22.3.2; Oracle GraalVM for JDK: 17.0.7 and 20.0.1. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition, Oracle GraalVM for JDK. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized read access to a subset of Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition, Oracle GraalVM for JDK accessible data. Note: This vulnerability can be exploited by using APIs in the specified Component, e.g., through a web service which supplies data to the APIs. This vulnerability also applies to Java deployments, typically in clients running sandboxed Java Web Start applications or sandboxed Java applets, that load and run untrusted code (e.g., code that comes from the internet) and rely on the Java sandbox for security. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 3.7 (Confidentiality impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2023-22045 is a low-severity Oracle Java and GraalVM Hotspot issue that may allow limited unauthorized data reading. It is remotely reachable in some scenarios, but Oracle rates exploitation as difficult. Business urgency is highest where affected Java versions process untrusted network-supplied data or rely on Java sandboxing.

Executive priority

Treat this as routine but necessary patch management. It is not currently a crisis signal, but affected Java runtimes are often widely deployed and can hide inside products, appliances, and legacy services.

Technical view

The affected component is Hotspot in Oracle Java SE and GraalVM versions listed by Oracle. CVSS 3.1 is 3.7: network attack vector, high attack complexity, no privileges or user interaction, unchanged scope, and low confidentiality impact only.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely where affected Oracle Java SE or GraalVM versions remain deployed, especially services passing untrusted data into relevant Java APIs. Client-side sandboxed Java Web Start or applet deployments also matter if they still run untrusted code.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show active exploitation, and CISA KEV status is false. Oracle describes the vulnerability as difficult to exploit and reachable through multiple protocols, including via web services supplying data to affected APIs.

Researcher notes

No CWE is provided in the source bundle. Impact is confidentiality-only with high attack complexity. Avoid assuming exploit availability or universal exposure; validate actual runtime versions and whether application data flows reach the affected Hotspot APIs.

Mitigation direction

  • Apply Oracle July 2023 CPU guidance for affected Oracle Java and GraalVM deployments.
  • Use Debian security advisories for affected Debian OpenJDK packages.
  • Check NetApp advisory if Java is embedded in NetApp-managed products.
  • Prioritize internet-facing Java services accepting untrusted input.
  • Retire or restrict sandboxed Java Web Start and applet use where possible.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Oracle Java SE, GraalVM Enterprise, and GraalVM for JDK versions.
  • Compare deployed versions against Oracle's affected version list.
  • Confirm each runtime is updated per the relevant vendor or distribution advisory.
  • Identify services passing network-supplied data into Java APIs.
  • Check whether any client deployments rely on Java sandboxing for untrusted code.
