CVE-2023-22006: Vulnerability in the Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition, Oracle GraalVM for JDK product of O...

Vulnerability in the Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition, Oracle GraalVM for JDK product of Oracle Java SE (component: Networking). Supported versions that are affected are Oracle Java SE: 11.0.19, 17.0.7, 20.0.1; Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition: 20.3.10, 21.3.6, 22.3.2; Oracle GraalVM for JDK: 17.0.7 and 20.0.1. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition, Oracle GraalVM for JDK. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition, Oracle GraalVM for JDK accessible data. Note: This vulnerability applies to Java deployments, typically in clients running sandboxed Java Web Start applications or sandboxed Java applets, that load and run untrusted code (e.g., code that comes from the internet) and rely on the Java sandbox for security. This vulnerability does not apply to Java deployments, typically in servers, that load and run only trusted code (e.g., code installed by an administrator). CVSS 3.1 Base Score 3.1 (Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2023-22006 is a low-severity Oracle Java/GraalVM Networking flaw. It mainly matters where Java clients run untrusted sandboxed applets or Java Web Start code from the internet. An attacker needs user interaction, and the stated impact is limited to unauthorized changes to some accessible data.

Executive priority

Treat this as a targeted hygiene item, not an emergency. The business risk is concentrated in older client-side Java use cases, with low CVSS impact and no cited active exploitation. Patch through normal vulnerability management unless legacy untrusted Java execution exists.

Technical view

The issue affects Oracle Java SE 11.0.19, 17.0.7, 20.0.1; GraalVM Enterprise 20.3.10, 21.3.6, 22.3.2; and GraalVM for JDK 17.0.7, 20.0.1. CVSS is 3.1, AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N. Oracle says trusted server-side Java deployments are not affected.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in legacy client-side Java environments that allow sandboxed applets or Java Web Start applications from untrusted sources. Typical server deployments that load only administrator-installed trusted code are out of scope per Oracle.

Exploitation context

No provided source shows active exploitation, and the CVE is not in KEV. Exploitation is described as difficult, unauthenticated, network-accessible via multiple protocols, and requiring human interaction from someone other than the attacker.

Researcher notes

The important boundary is deployment model. Oracle explicitly limits applicability to sandboxed client-side Java running untrusted code and excludes trusted-code server deployments. Evidence does not include exploit details, fixed version mapping, or KEV status beyond false.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Oracle July 2023 CPU guidance for the appropriate Java or GraalVM update.
  • Apply relevant Debian or NetApp vendor updates where those products package affected Java components.
  • Disable or restrict untrusted Java Web Start and applet execution where still present.
  • Do not rely on the Java sandbox for untrusted internet-origin code.
  • Prioritize client-side Java estates over trusted server-only Java deployments.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Oracle Java SE and GraalVM versions against the listed affected releases.
  • Identify systems that run sandboxed applets or Java Web Start from untrusted sources.
  • Confirm server Java workloads load only trusted administrator-installed code.
  • Check endpoint and application owners for legacy browser or desktop Java usage.
  • Verify vendor advisories have been reviewed for each affected platform.
