CVE-2022-4698: ProfilePress <= 4.5.0 - Authenticated (Administrator+) Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Form Settings

The ProfilePress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via several form fields in versions up to, and including, 4.5.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with administrator-level permissions and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This only affects multi-site installations and installations where unfiltered_html has been disabled.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

ProfilePress for WordPress allowed a highly privileged admin to save script content in certain form settings. That script could later run in a visitor’s browser on affected pages. The issue is constrained because it requires administrator-level access and only applies to multisite installations or sites where unfiltered_html is disabled.

Executive priority

Treat as a moderate-priority cleanup item unless administrator compromise is suspected. Prioritize internet-facing WordPress sites, multisite deployments, and environments with many administrators or weak admin account controls.

Technical view

CVE-2022-4698 is stored cross-site scripting in ProfilePress through insufficient sanitization and output escaping in several form fields. Affected versions are up to and including 4.5.0. CVSS 3.1 is 5.5 with high privileges required, changed scope, and low confidentiality and integrity impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to WordPress installations running ProfilePress 4.5.0 or earlier under the stated multisite or unfiltered_html-disabled conditions. Sites without the plugin, newer versions, or normal unrestricted administrator HTML handling are not indicated as affected by the provided sources.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not show KEV listing or active exploitation. Exploitation requires authenticated administrator-level privileges, so this is mainly a risk for compromised admins, delegated site administrators, or environments where admin accounts are broadly shared.

Researcher notes

The evidence supports CWE-79 stored XSS with administrator-plus privileges. The provided affected data is sparse and includes a defaultStatus of unaffected, so validate against Wordfence and plugin release history before broad asset conclusions.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify all WordPress sites running ProfilePress.
  • Upgrade ProfilePress beyond 4.5.0 or to the current vendor-supported release.
  • Review vendor and Wordfence guidance before choosing compensating controls.
  • Restrict administrator access to trusted, MFA-protected accounts.
  • Audit form settings for unexpected script content.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm installed ProfilePress versions across WordPress assets.
  • Check whether affected sites are multisite or have unfiltered_html disabled.
  • Review admin activity around ProfilePress form settings.
  • Test patched staging sites for expected form rendering.
  • Verify no suspicious scripts remain in saved form settings.
