CVE-2022-43989: Password recovery vulnerability in SICK SIM2x00 (ARM) Partnumber 1092673 and 1081902 with firmware version...

Password recovery vulnerability in SICK SIM2x00 (ARM) Partnumber 1092673 and 1081902 with firmware version < 1.2.0 allows an unprivileged remote attacker to gain access to the userlevel defined as RecoverableUserLevel by invocating the password recovery mechanism method. This leads to an increase in their privileges on the system and thereby affecting the confidentiality integrity and availability of the system. An attacker can expect repeatable success by exploiting the vulnerability. The recommended solution is to update the firmware to a version >= 1.2.0 as soon as possible (available in SICK Support Portal).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Certain SICK SIM2x00 ARM devices have a password recovery weakness that can let a remote unauthenticated attacker obtain a recoverable user privilege level. That can affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The vendor-recommended fix is firmware 1.2.0 or later.

Executive priority

Treat as a high-priority OT remediation item if these devices are deployed. The issue is remotely reachable and repeatable, but the provided sources do not establish active exploitation.

Technical view

CVE-2022-43989 affects SICK SIM2x00 ARM part numbers 1092673 and 1081902 running firmware below 1.2.0. The issue is classified as CWE-306 and has CVSS 3.1 score 7.3. A remote attacker with no privileges or user interaction can invoke the password recovery mechanism and gain the configured RecoverableUserLevel.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to SICK SIM2x00 ARM devices with the named part numbers and firmware below 1.2.0. Risk is higher where device management or recovery functions are reachable from untrusted networks.

Exploitation context

The CVE states repeatable exploitation is expected and requires network access, low complexity, no privileges, and no user interaction. The source bundle does not show CISA KEV listing or cited evidence of active exploitation.

Researcher notes

The public bundle gives affected hardware, firmware threshold, CVSS vector, CWE-306, and vendor update direction. It does not provide protocol details, a full advisory excerpt, exploit telemetry, or compensating controls beyond checking SICK guidance.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory SICK SIM2x00 ARM devices and confirm part numbers.
  • Upgrade affected firmware to version 1.2.0 or later.
  • Obtain firmware through the SICK Support Portal.
  • Check SICK PSIRT guidance for any environment-specific mitigations.
  • Prioritize devices reachable from untrusted or shared networks.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm each device part number is 1092673 or 1081902.
  • Record installed firmware and identify versions below 1.2.0.
  • Verify upgraded devices report firmware 1.2.0 or later.
  • Review asset exposure for remote access to device management functions.
  • Document remaining exceptions and vendor remediation plans.
