CVE-2022-35905: An issue was discovered in Bentley MicroStation before 10.17.0.x and Bentley View before 10.17.0.x.

An issue was discovered in Bentley MicroStation before 10.17.0.x and Bentley View before 10.17.0.x. Using an affected version of MicroStation or MicroStation-based application to open an FBX file containing crafted data can force an out-of-bounds read. Exploitation of these vulnerabilities within the parsing of FBX files could enable an attacker to read information in the context of the current process.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This is a low-severity information disclosure issue in Bentley MicroStation, Bentley View, and MicroStation-based applications before 10.17.0.x. A user would need to open a malicious FBX file. Successful exploitation could let an attacker read limited information from the affected application process.

Executive priority

Treat as routine patching unless the organization frequently processes third-party FBX files in affected Bentley tools. Prioritize engineering workstations with external file intake.

Technical view

The vulnerability is an out-of-bounds read during FBX parsing. CVSS 3.1 is 3.3 with local attack vector, low complexity, no privileges required, required user interaction, and low confidentiality impact only.

Likely exposure

Exposure is mainly on engineering or design workstations using affected Bentley products and opening FBX files, especially from external parties. This is not described as a remotely reachable service vulnerability.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not indicate active exploitation, and CISA KEV status is false. Exploitation requires convincing a user to open a crafted FBX file in an affected application.

Researcher notes

No CWE is listed in the source bundle. The confirmed impact is information disclosure in the current process through crafted FBX parsing. Do not assume code execution or active exploitation from these sources.

Mitigation direction

  • Update Bentley MicroStation and Bentley View to 10.17.0.x or later.
  • Review Bentley advisory BE-2022-0012 for product-specific guidance.
  • Restrict opening FBX files from untrusted or unsolicited sources.
  • Handle external FBX files in isolated review workflows where practical.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory Bentley MicroStation, Bentley View, and MicroStation-based application versions.
  • Confirm no deployed versions are earlier than 10.17.0.x.
  • Check whether teams receive or process external FBX files.
  • Review endpoint logs for unusual application crashes around FBX handling.
