CVE-2022-31147: jquery-validation ReDoS in url2 due to incomplete fix of CVE-2021-43306

The jQuery Validation Plugin (jquery-validation) provides drop-in validation for forms. Versions of jquery-validation prior to 1.19.5 are vulnerable to regular expression denial of service (ReDoS) when an attacker is able to supply arbitrary input to the url2 method. This is due to an incomplete fix for CVE-2021-43306. Users should upgrade to version 1.19.5 to receive a patch.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

jquery-validation before 1.19.5 can be forced into excessive processing when validating attacker-controlled input with the url2 method. The business impact is availability, not data theft: affected forms or services may slow down or stop responding under crafted input. The vendor patch is version 1.19.5.

Executive priority

Prioritize remediation for internet-facing forms or high-volume workflows using jquery-validation. The issue affects availability and has a vendor patch. It should be handled in normal high-severity patch cycles, faster where public unauthenticated input reaches url2.

Technical view

CVE-2022-31147 is a ReDoS flaw in jquery-validation url2 caused by an incomplete fix for CVE-2021-43306. Affected versions are below 1.19.5. The CVSS 3.1 score is 7.5, driven by network reachability, low complexity, no privileges, no user interaction, and high availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely where applications include jquery-validation below 1.19.5 and accept untrusted input validated through url2. Check direct package dependencies, lockfiles, bundled frontend assets, and any vendored copies. The source bundle does not identify affected downstream products.

Exploitation context

The sources describe attacker-supplied arbitrary input to url2 causing ReDoS. CISA KEV status is false in the provided bundle, and no cited source states active exploitation. Treat this as exploitable in exposed validation paths, but do not assume known in-the-wild attacks from the evidence provided.

Researcher notes

Evidence is strongest for affected version range, vulnerable method, root cause, and patch version. The bundle does not provide exploit telemetry, downstream product mapping, or alternative mitigations. This is CWE-1333 regular expression inefficiency with availability impact only under the provided CVSS vector.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade jquery-validation to version 1.19.5 or later.
  • Review the GitHub advisory and 1.19.5 release notes before deployment.
  • If upgrade is delayed, reduce exposure of workflows using url2 and follow vendor guidance.
  • Retest form validation behavior after updating the plugin.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory all jquery-validation versions in package manifests, lockfiles, and bundled assets.
  • Identify code paths or forms that invoke the url2 validation method.
  • Confirm whether untrusted users can submit input reaching url2 validation.
  • Verify deployed assets are rebuilt and no older vendored copy remains.
