CVE-2022-31126: Unauthenticated Remote Code Execution in Roxy-wi

Roxy-wi is an open source web interface for managing Haproxy, Nginx, Apache and Keepalived servers. A vulnerability in Roxy-wi allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to code execution by sending a specially crafted HTTP request to /app/options.py file. This affects Roxy-wi versions before 6.1.1.0. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this issue.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2022-31126 lets an unauthenticated remote attacker run code against vulnerable Roxy-wi deployments. Roxy-wi manages HAProxy, Nginx, Apache, and Keepalived servers, so compromise could affect important traffic and service management infrastructure. Versions before 6.1.1.0 are affected. The vendor advisory says to upgrade and lists no workaround.

Executive priority

Handle as a same-cycle critical remediation item. A vulnerable Roxy-wi instance could give an unauthenticated attacker code execution on a management system tied to web and availability infrastructure. Upgrade first, then reduce network exposure.

Technical view

The issue is CWE-74 in Roxy-wi before 6.1.1.0. The advisory describes unauthenticated remote code execution through a specially crafted HTTP request to /app/options.py. CVSS 3.1 is 10.0 with network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges, no user interaction, changed scope, and high confidentiality and integrity impact.

Likely exposure

Organizations running Roxy-wi versions earlier than 6.1.1.0 are potentially exposed, especially where the Roxy-wi web interface is reachable from untrusted networks. Exposure should be checked wherever Roxy-wi is used to manage HAProxy, Nginx, Apache, or Keepalived infrastructure.

Exploitation context

The provided sources support unauthenticated remote code execution and a critical CVSS score. They do not state active exploitation, and the bundle marks KEV as false. Treat this as urgent because no credentials or user interaction are required, but do not claim observed exploitation from these sources.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE record and GitHub advisory. The advisory names the vulnerable endpoint and affected version range but provides no workaround. Avoid assuming exploit activity, downstream product impact, or patch details beyond upgrading to 6.1.1.0 or later.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade Roxy-wi to version 6.1.1.0 or later.
  • Restrict Roxy-wi web access to trusted administrative networks.
  • Review vendor guidance for any newer hardening or upgrade notes.
  • Prioritize systems managing production traffic or availability-critical services.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory all Roxy-wi deployments and record installed versions.
  • Confirm no deployment is running a version earlier than 6.1.1.0.
  • Check whether the Roxy-wi web interface is reachable from untrusted networks.
  • Review access logs for unusual requests to /app/options.py.
  • Verify post-upgrade service management functions still operate normally.
