The TP-240 (aka tp240dvr) component in Mitel MiCollab before 9.4 SP1 FP1 and MiVoice Business Express through 8.1 allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information and cause a denial of service (performance degradation and excessive outbound traffic). This was exploited in the wild in February and March 2022 for the TP240PhoneHome DDoS attack.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This flaw affects Mitel systems using the TP-240 component and can let unauthenticated remote attackers trigger sensitive information exposure and service degradation. It was used in the TP240PhoneHome DDoS activity in early 2022, so exposed systems should be treated as urgent legacy-risk assets.

Executive priority

Treat this as a high-priority remediation item for any exposed affected Mitel deployment. The business risk is not only local service outage; compromised exposure can contribute to large-scale DDoS traffic, creating operational, reputational, and provider-escalation risk.

Technical view

CVE-2022-26143 is a CWE-306 missing-authentication issue in Mitel MiCollab before 9.4 SP1 FP1 and MiVoice Business Express through 8.1. The CVSS 3.1 score is 9.8. Reported impacts include sensitive information disclosure, denial of service, performance degradation, and excessive outbound traffic.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where affected Mitel MiCollab or MiVoice Business Express systems have the TP-240/tp240dvr component reachable by untrusted networks. The bundle does not provide a complete product inventory method, so asset validation should start with Mitel version and component checks.

Exploitation context

Exploitation in the wild is documented. The CVE description ties activity to February and March 2022 TP240PhoneHome DDoS attacks, and CISA lists CVE-2022-26143 in the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Do not infer current active exploitation beyond those sources.

Researcher notes

The supplied CVE data names affected version boundaries and impacts, but not detailed root-cause internals or vendor patch mechanics. Public reporting from Akamai, Cloudflare, Shadowserver, Team Cymru, and Ars Technica centers on reflection/amplification DDoS behavior associated with TP240PhoneHome.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify Mitel MiCollab and MiVoice Business Express deployments and confirm versions.
  • Review Mitel advisory 22-0001 for vendor-approved remediation and upgrade guidance.
  • Prioritize upgrading MiCollab before 9.4 SP1 FP1 systems.
  • Apply compensating network controls where affected TP-240 services are exposed.
  • Monitor for unusual outbound traffic or performance degradation from Mitel systems.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory externally reachable Mitel systems and map them to affected versions.
  • Confirm whether the TP-240/tp240dvr component is present or enabled.
  • Check logs and network telemetry for abnormal outbound traffic patterns.
  • Verify remediation status against Mitel advisory 22-0001.
  • Track CISA KEV status in vulnerability management reporting.
