CVE-2022-22206: Junos OS: SRX series: The PFE will crash when specific traffic is scanned by Enhanced Web Filtering safe-search

A Buffer Overflow vulnerability in the PFE of Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX series allows an unauthenticated network based attacker to cause a Denial of Service (DoS). The PFE will crash when specific traffic is scanned by Enhanced Web Filtering safe-search feature of UTM (Unified Threat management). Continued receipt of this specific traffic will create a sustained Denial of Service (DoS) condition. This issue affects Juniper Networks Junos OS: 20.2 versions prior to 20.2R3-S4 on SRX Series; 20.3 versions prior to 20.3R3-S3 on SRX Series; 20.4 versions prior to 20.4R3-S3 on SRX Series; 21.1 versions prior to 21.1R3-S1 on SRX Series; 21.2 versions prior to 21.2R2-S2, 21.2R3 on SRX Series; 21.3 versions prior to 21.3R2 on SRX Series; 21.4 versions prior to 21.4R2 on SRX Series. This issue does not affect Juniper Networks Junos OS versions prior to 20.2R1.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

This flaw can crash the forwarding engine on Juniper SRX firewalls when specific traffic is inspected by UTM Enhanced Web Filtering safe-search. An unauthenticated network attacker could cause service disruption, and repeated traffic could keep the device in a denial-of-service condition.

Executive priority

High priority for organizations relying on SRX firewalls for network availability. The issue affects availability, not confidentiality or integrity, but firewall crashes can disrupt business services and security enforcement.

Technical view

CVE-2022-22206 is a CWE-120 buffer overflow in Junos OS PFE on SRX Series. Affected branches are 20.2 through 21.4 before specified fixed releases. Attack prerequisites are network access, no credentials, no user interaction, and vulnerable safe-search scanning exposure.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely on Juniper SRX Series firewalls running affected Junos OS releases with UTM Enhanced Web Filtering safe-search enabled. Junos versions before 20.2R1 are stated as not affected.

Exploitation context

The source bundle does not report active exploitation, and KEV is false. The vendor description supports remote unauthenticated denial of service, with sustained impact if the triggering traffic continues.

Researcher notes

The evidence supports availability-only impact with CVSS 7.5. The vulnerable path involves PFE handling of traffic scanned by UTM Enhanced Web Filtering safe-search. No exploit mechanics or public exploitation evidence are provided in the bundle.

Mitigation direction

  • Upgrade SRX devices to the fixed Junos OS release for each affected branch.
  • Prioritize internet-facing or high-traffic SRX firewalls using UTM safe-search inspection.
  • If upgrade is delayed, check Juniper JSA69710 for supported mitigations or workarounds.
  • Monitor affected devices for recurring PFE crashes until remediation is complete.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory SRX Series devices and record Junos OS branch and exact release.
  • Confirm whether UTM Enhanced Web Filtering safe-search is enabled on each device.
  • Compare installed releases against the fixed-version thresholds in the advisory.
  • Review device telemetry and logs for PFE crashes or repeated forwarding disruptions.
