CVE-2022-21548: Vulnerability in the Oracle WebLogic Server product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Core).

Vulnerability in the Oracle WebLogic Server product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are 12.2.1.3.0, 12.2.1.4.0 and 14.1.1.0.0. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via T3, IIOP to compromise Oracle WebLogic Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of Oracle WebLogic Server accessible data and unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of Oracle WebLogic Server. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 6.5 (Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L).

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2022-21548 affects Oracle WebLogic Server and can be reached over the network without authentication through T3 or IIOP. A successful attack could alter some WebLogic-accessible data or cause a partial service outage. It is not described as data theft, but it still affects integrity and availability of middleware systems.

Executive priority

Treat this as a moderate-priority middleware risk. Move faster for externally reachable WebLogic systems or environments supporting critical business services, because exploitation requires no credentials and can affect data integrity and service availability.

Technical view

Oracle describes a Core component flaw in WebLogic Server versions 12.2.1.3.0, 12.2.1.4.0, and 14.1.1.0.0. CVSS 3.1 is 6.5 with network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges, and no user interaction. Impact is limited to low integrity and low availability, with no confidentiality impact listed.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely where affected WebLogic versions are reachable over network paths that allow T3 or IIOP. Internet exposure would raise urgency, but the source bundle does not state whether exploitation requires public access or only internal network access.

Exploitation context

The CVE is marked easily exploitable by Oracle because no authentication or user interaction is required. The bundle does not include CISA KEV status or any cited evidence of active exploitation, so active exploitation should not be assumed from these sources alone.

Researcher notes

No CWE is provided in the source bundle. Oracle identifies the affected component as Core and the access vectors as T3 and IIOP. Analysis should focus on version confirmation, reachable protocol surfaces, and patch state rather than assuming broader Fusion Middleware impact.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Oracle July 2022 Critical Patch Update guidance for WebLogic Server.
  • Apply applicable Oracle-supported WebLogic patches or updates for affected versions.
  • Restrict T3 and IIOP network access to trusted administrative and application paths.
  • Prioritize remediation for internet-facing or broadly reachable WebLogic instances.
  • Monitor Oracle advisories for any revised mitigation or patch guidance.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory WebLogic Server instances and record exact versions.
  • Identify systems running 12.2.1.3.0, 12.2.1.4.0, or 14.1.1.0.0.
  • Confirm whether T3 or IIOP is reachable from untrusted networks.
  • Verify Oracle CPU July 2022 or later applicable patches are installed.
  • Review logs for unusual availability events or unauthorized data modification indicators.
