CVE-2021-46652: This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Bentley V...

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Bentley View 10.15.0.75. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of DGN files. Crafted data in a DGN file can trigger a write past the end of an allocated buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-15538.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

Bentley View 10.15.0.75 can be abused through a malicious DGN file or webpage to run code as the user opening it. This is not described as network-wormable; it needs user interaction. The business risk is compromise of workstations that review engineering or design files.

Executive priority

Treat this as a targeted workstation risk for teams handling design files. Prioritize inventory and vendor-guided remediation for Bentley View installations, especially where staff open externally supplied DGN files.

Technical view

The flaw is an out-of-bounds write in DGN file parsing, mapped to CWE-787. Crafted DGN data can write past an allocated buffer and allow code execution in the current process. The CVSS 3.0 score is 7.8 with local attack vector and required user interaction.

Likely exposure

Exposure is likely limited to endpoints running Bentley View 10.15.0.75, especially engineering, construction, facilities, or design teams that receive DGN files from third parties. Risk depends on how often users open external design files or browse pages that can deliver malicious content.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show CISA KEV listing or active exploitation. The described attack requires a target user to visit a malicious page or open a malicious file, so phishing or document-exchange workflows are the most plausible delivery paths.

Researcher notes

Evidence is specific to Bentley View 10.15.0.75 and DGN parsing. The bundle names ZDI-CAN-15538 and ZDI-22-239 but does not include proof of active exploitation or detailed fixed-version information. Avoid broadening affected products without vendor confirmation.

Mitigation direction

  • Review Bentley advisory BE-2021-0009 for supported remediation or upgrade guidance.
  • Inventory and remove or upgrade Bentley View 10.15.0.75 where present.
  • Restrict opening untrusted DGN files until vendor guidance is applied.
  • Harden email and web controls for unsolicited CAD or design file delivery.
  • Run Bentley View with least-privileged user accounts.

Validation and detection

  • Search endpoint software inventory for Bentley View version 10.15.0.75.
  • Identify teams that receive DGN files from external parties.
  • Confirm vendor advisory status and installed fixed version, if available.
  • Review EDR alerts for Bentley View child processes or crashes.
